Last Friday, I reviewed at the site with you the proposed garage addition to the house above. On the
attached portion of the drawings you gave me I have indicated the area or the garage floor that should
be underlain by 4 inches (2 - 2 inch layers with staggered joints) of polvstyrene (hard foam) insulation
up against the existing foundation wall of the house. This is to prevent frost penetration below the
existing house footings which can remain in place and does not have to be underpinned. Since heat
flows to cold and not vice versa, this insulation will keep the basement foundation along the proposed
garage from being undermined by frost action without requiring underpinning of the existing house
footing.
We also discussed the area where the driveway from Cates Street would cross the water line to the
building. Similar insulation should cover the water line if more than a few inches of existing cover is
stripped away. In that case, the depth of the water line should be known, the type of driveway
(concrete or asphalt) (asphalt is recommended) so that a design can be made for the driveway and
possible insulation of the water line can be recommended.
