Gentlemen:
My contractor has spoken with your department about adding a small addition to my
home. You requested a letter from me explaining the reason for the space.
My mother is 80 years old and lives alone in Edina. She does not drive, and I am her sole
source of transportation. In addition, she is beginning to exhibit some signs of failing
health. I would like to add a small, independent living space to my home so she can
maintain her own privacy, but still be close enough when she requires help. We are
looking at a space of approximately 500 sq. ft., that would consist of a living room,
bedroom, bath, and kitchenette just large enough to hold a small table with two chairs.
She doesn't require a full-sized range or refrigerator, and could manage nicely with the
scaled-down versions. A microwave would not be suitable for her, since she has never
used one and has a fear of them. She also does not use a dishwasher, and would not need
that. She can use my laundry area, so that would not be a necessity, either.
I purchased the home in late January, and live there with my 9 year-old grand-daughter. I
would like to install a door connecting the addition to the existing house, in order to make
it part of the home for future use. By the time my mother no longer needs the space, my
grand-daughter will be in her late teens and that will become her area.
I understand your concern about the space being used for rental property, but I assure you
I have no such intentions. If the day should come when I sell the property, I would
certainly be willing to remove the kitchen, or make whatever changes you require in
order to make it less of an independent area.
