Re: Excavation Observations and Compaction Testing, Proposed House, 14211 Fisher
Avenue, Prior Lake, Minnesota
As you requested on December 8, 1999, excavation observations and compaction tests were
conducted at the abuve referenced location. The purpose of our excavation observations was to
aid in evaluating the suitability of the excavation bottom soils for support of the proposed fill
and/or foundations. The purpose of the compaction tests was to aid in determining the densities
obtained in the fill placed and compacted for foundation support.
Available Information
TIle proposed house is a two-story lookout with attached garage. The building envelope is about
75 by 30 feet.
Existing fill had been placed on this lot prior to our site observations. Existing grades on the lot
within the building area ranged from about 941 to 932. Finished floor elevation for the basement
is 933.4 and the garage 941.1.
Excavntion Observation
Our observation was conducted on December 8, 1999, by a senior engineering assistant. At the
time of our observation, the existing fill and underlying topsoil had been removed. Bottom of
excavation elevations ranged from about 927 Y:z at the center of the west footing line to about 932
Y:z along the north footing line and from 930 to 938 along the south footing line.
The soils removed ti-om the building area consisted of silty sand and clayey sand fill and clay
topsoil. The soils exposed in the excavation bottom consisted of silty sand and lean clay. Based
on our shallow (less than 3 feet deep) hand auger probes, the silty sands wel e judged to be
medium dense and the lean clay in a very stiff condition.

The excavation had been oversized up to about 5 feet beyond the outside edge of the footing
depending on the fill depth at that particular location. Up to about 6 feet of fill will be required
to establish basement floor subgrade elevation. The fill was obtained from the cut portion of the
lot (southwest building area).
Compaction Tests
Three compaction tests were conducted on December 9,1999. Results of the compaction tests
and Proctor are attached to this report. The compaction tests met or exceeded the minimum
. density requirement of 95 percent of standard Proctor density (ASTM D 698).
Conclusions
Based on the soils observed in the excavation bottom and sampled in our shallow hand auger
probes, it is our opinion that the silty sand and lean clay soils are adequate for support of the
proposed fill and foundation loads.
Based on the construction staking by Stocker Excavating, adequate oversizing was pro\'iderl
along all building lines.
Based on the results of our compaction tests, it appears that the fill has been compacted to meet
or exceed 95 percent of standard Proctor density.
General
Services perfonned by the geotechnical engineers for this project have been conducted with that
level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by members of the profession currently practicing in this
area. No warranty. expressed or implied, is made.
It should be noted that standard penetration test borings with power equipment were not taken to
evaluate the soils at depth. However, the soils which were visible and the results of the hand auger
probes indicate that the risk of detrimental settlement due to poor soils at depth is very small and
we, thus, recommend that it be assumed by the owner. The cost for taking soil borings to better
define that risk does not appear wan-anted.
