Re: Window Opening in Existing Office Area
Dear Shawn:.
Recently you called me and requested that I perform the necessary structural analysis and provide
structural framing recommendations required for placing two new windows in. the exterior office area
wall of your warehouse building I have completed my structural analysis and have detennined that you
can place the two windows in this exterior wall provided you make some minor structural framing
modifications to the wall. This is explained further below.
The location of the new windows will cut right through the lowest one of three horizontal steel wind girts
spaced about 4'_8" center to center vertically, and spanning from column to column in the building_ The
wind girts support the exterior skin of the building against wind forces. The lowest wind girt will need to
be headered off with a vertical steel header on each side of the new opening. The header will span from
. the foundation up to the second '~.rind girt. Then. secondary horizontal ains will need to be olaced with
one at the top and bonom ofthe new opening. Finally, the existing exterior skin will need to be
reattached to the new steel framing_ I have checked the second girt for the increased wind force that it
must now resist, and it remains adequate to resist it. We spoke about using some existing steel channels
that you have on hand as headers and secondary girts. I have checked these out and they will work fine,
also. 1 have included sketches of my framing recommendations for your lIse.
The support of your office mezzanine also needs to be considered so that the mezzanine floor remains
adequately supported, The new window opening wiII also cut through a wood stud exterior wall. Upon
investigating the floor framing, we both saw that the floor joists are not bearing on this wall, but rather,
run parallel to this wall. Therefore, this is a non-load bearing mezzanine walJ, and only a minimal
header and sill plate both spanning between existing wall studs will be required over the new opening.
The sketches! have included show my recommendations for this framing as well.
