Dear Mr. Geil:
Re: Excavation Observations and Compaction Testing, Carwash Addition for Holiday
Station Store #198, 16800 Duluth Avenue Southeast, Prior Lake, Minnesota
As you authorized on April 7, 1999, we have performed excavation observations and
compaction testing for the proposed carwash addition in Prior Lake, Minnesota. The purpose
of the excavation observations was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the soils encountered
in the excavation bottoms for fill and building support. The purpose of the compaction testing
was to aid in evaluating the suitability of the engineered fill placed for building support.
Available Information
Braun Intertec Corporation performed soil borings for the Holiday Station Store #198 in
September of 1996. The results of these soil borings were submitted in our "Geotechnical
Evaluation Repon", dated September 8, 1996 (Braun Intertec Project BABX-95-875A).
Braun Intertec also performed construction testing services for the Holiday Station Store #198
in the fall of 1996. The results of this wotk were submitted in our "Summary Reponfor
Construction Testing Services", dated February 11, 1997 (Braun Intertec
Project BODX-96-263C). During this work, an area was corrected for a carwash at the
southeast corner of the building. The location of the carwash addition was changed;
therefore, a soil correction was required on the west side of the proposed carwash addition.
We understand the footings for the car wash will bear about 6 feet below grade (approximate
. .
elevation 958).
Excavation Observations
The excavation observation was conducted by a senior engineering assistant on April 19,
1999. The excavation observation consisted of observing the soil exposed at the bottom and
side walls of the excavation. The approximate density or consistency of the soils encountered
was estimated by judging the force required to advance random, shallow (up to 3 feet deep)
hand auger probes. The soil classifications were determined by observing the hand auger
probe cuttings in general accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM) procedures.

Project BODX-99-Q55C
May 13. 1999
Page 2
The excavating contractor, Witt Construction. used a smooth-bucket backhoe to remove
approximately 12 to 13 feet of unsuitable soils from below the proposed carwash addition.
The unsuitable soils consisted of 9 to 10 feet of uncontrolled clay fill overlying about 2 feet of
buried clay topsoil. The bottom of the excavation ranged from approximate elevation 951 on
the east side of the excavation to approximate elevation 952 on the west side of the
excavation. Soils exposed in the excavation bottom primarily consisted of silty sand with
layers of clay that was judged to be in a medium dense condition.
Groundwater was observed seeping in the excavation bottom at approximate elevation 951.
The size of the soil correction measured approximately 25 feet by 35 feet and was about 12 to
13 feet deep. The excavation was oversized approximately 10 to 12 feet on the west side of
the proposed addition. The oversizing along the south side of the proposed carwash addition
was limited to about 7 to 10 feet due to an existing stonn sewer line (southwest comer) and
the existing paved driveway. This provides about a 3/4:1 oversizing from bottom of footing
to bottom of excavation elevation. The sidewalls of the excavation were judged to be in a
stiff condition. It is our opinion the oversizing is adequate for fill and building support.
Fill
The engineered fill placed for building support in the soil correction consisted of an imported.
clean, washed sand. The engineered fill was placed in unifonn lifts and compacted with a
large, self-propelled, vibratory sheepsfoot roller.
Compaction Tests
A total of six compaction tests were perfonned in the engineered fill placed for building
support. All compaction tests exceeded the minimum density requirement of 95 percent of
standard Proctor density (ASTM D 698). Compaction test results and Proctor curves are
attached to this report. .
Conclusions
Based on our soil boring information. previous and recent excavation observations and hand
auger probes, it is our opinion the soils encountered in the excavation bottoms are suitable for
fill and building support.
Based on the construction staking provided by others and the suitability of the side walls of
the excavation, it is our opinion that the excavation was adequately oversized and the 3/4: 1
oversizing along the south side is adequate for support of the proposed fill and building.
Based on our compaction test results, it is our opinion the engineered fill placed has been
adequately compacted for building support.

RE: Building Addition for Holiday Stationstores, Inc.
16800 Duluth Ave. S.E., Prior Lake, MN
Dear J enni:
As per our phone conversation today, I am diligently working on the remaining items that you
have requested of Holiday Companies, which include: revise the survey to reflect the proposed
carwash, revise the landscaping plan to reflect the (5) five shrubs that were inadvertently omitted from
the final construction plans and the letter of credit for the proposed landscaping.
Pertaining to the carwash addition enlarging from the approved 23'-0" to 24'-4" which is shown
on the construction drawings. The reason for this is to maintain the ingress and egress in room #113
(Equipment Room) and more importantly to maintain the recommended clearances around the carwash
equipment during installation, operation and maintenance.
I do hope that this small increase in building size does not produce any implications in
completing the permitting process.
If you should like to discuss this in further, or need additional information, please feel free to
call me at 612-830-8884
Sincerely,

RE: Building Addition for Holiday StatioDstores, Inc.
16800 Duluth Ave. S.E., Prior Lake, MN
Dear Jenni:
I have enclosed for your use a copy of the landscape cost for this project. This cost is what we
based the L.O.C. from. This contractor may not receive the project, but is in the running and the only
one that I could pull this cost from. I believe that is reasonable.
If you should like to discuss this in further, or need additional information, please feel free to
call me at 612-830-8884
