Prior Lake, MN 55372-1714 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT September 2, 2008 ~ 10C Frank Boyles, City Manager CONSIDER APPROVAL OF APPOINTMENTS TO THE COMMUNITY SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE Introduction The purpose of this agenda item is to appoint five persons to serve as the Community Safety Advisory Committee. Historv The Long Range Planning Committee amended the 2030 Vision and Strategic Plan last February to include a new vision element. The new element entitled, "Safe and Healthy Community," acknowledged the fact that Prior Lake cannot achieve the 2030 Vision unless residents feel safe. This vision element affirms that each of us is responsible for making the community safe and healthy. Following a neighborhood meeting regarding the potential relocation of a Level III sexual predator into the community, the City Council solicited applications from citizens to establish a Community Safety Task Force. Forty persons applied to participate. The Task Force identified five key areas of focus and divided into subcommittees to examine each. The Task Force prepared a report regarding steps to be taken to address each area. The staff then identified fifteen items for accomplishment in the near term. The City Council desires to make the safe and healthy communities efforts ongoing and, therefore, directed staff to solicit applications from Task Force members to serve on the new advisory committee. Current Circumstances Five Task Force members submitted applications. They are: Janine Alcorn Gina Gertner Susan Hadley Beth Jader Woody Spitzmueller Councilmembers Hedberg and LeMair, and myself, have interviewed four of the candidates. Because of schedule limitations, Councilmember LeMair and I interviewed the fifth applicant. www.cityofpriorlake.com Phone 952.447.9800 / Fax 952.447.4245 Conclusion The interview committee believes that all five candidates should be appointed to the committee in accordance with the attached resolution.
