Prior Lake, MN 55372-1714 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT MEETING DATE: AGENDA #: PREPARED BY: AGENDA ITEM: CHEMICAL HEALTH WEEK OCLAMATION PRESENTATION: The City's Community Safety Advisory Committee recognizes that tobacco and alcohol use and abuse is one significant area of focus to improve community safety. Janine Alcorn, a member of the Community Safety Advisory Committee works in the school district attempting to control chemical abuse. She has suggested that the Mayor read a proclamation declaring November 16-22 as Chemical Health Week in Prior Lake. Attached is the proclamation the Mayor will read. www.cityofpriorlake.com Phone 952.447.9800 / Fax 952.447.4245 ~ B ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ S ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~.~ S 8 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ .~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ProcCamation Declaring Chemical Health Week in the City of Prior Lake, November 16-22, 2008 More than half a million Americans will die this year from alcohol, tobacco and other drug-related causes; and Every person in the State of Minnesota is affected by alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse; and The human and economic costs associated with alcohol use is an estimated $4.5 billion, which amounts to more than $900 per person in Minnesota; and Each year, smoking costs Minnesota $1,98 billion in health care costs, which amounts to $393 per person in the state; and Prevention and treatment efforts have made major gains in reversing the trend toward more and more alcohol, tobacco and other drug use in our communities; and Alcohol, tobacco and other drug use are the major factors in fires, crimes, domestic violence, school failure, child abuse, injury and lost productivity; and Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are one of the leading causes of mental retardation in the United States, yet these disorders are 100 percent preventable; and WHEREAS, WHEREAS, WHEREAS WHEREAS WHEREAS WHEREAS WHEREAS Business, government, law enforcement, schools, religious institutions, service organizations, neighborhoods, youth, senior citizens, and other individuals are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to help reduce and prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse by wearing and/or displaying the color red during Minnesota Chemical Health Week, WHEREAS, NOW, THEREFORE, be it proclaimed that November 16 - 22,2008, be declared CHEMICAL HEALTH WEEK throughout the City of Prior lake, Minnesota, and BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the Mayor and Council Members of the City of Prior Lake support the activities of Minnesota Chemical Health Week and the work of the Minnesota Prevention Resource Center, and encourage the citizens of Prior Lake to participate in Minnesota Chemical Health Week activities and other alcohol and drug abuse prevention efforts year 'round.
