PRESENTATION REGARDING NEW DAKOTAHIICE CENTER
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has opened a new state-of-the-
art ice sheet. As the Council is aware, this action is consistent with the second
priority recommendation of the Park Athletics and Recreation Task Force which
called for the addition of a second indoor ice sheet.
The new ice center features a National Hockey League size rink. The arena has
capacity for 900 persons with heated benches with back rests and an additional
400 persons can watch from the two mezzanines. The glass around the rink is a
new self-supporting seamless style which is easy for viewing. The rink will be
available for indoor soccer in the summer as well as an alternate site for the Pow
Wow in the event of inclement weather.
The building has a half dozen green features including:
. 32,000 sq ft green roof,
. Passive sky lights for natural light,
. Solar panels to heat ice-making water,
. High efficiency sinks, faucets and toilets,
. Energy-saving compressors, from which the heat is used to warm the stands,
. Seating made from recycled plastic,
. Pavers may from recycled plastic.
The seven locker rooms allow high utilization of the arena from a tournament
perspective and the two locker rooms reserved for the Laker varsity teams are
second to none.
Since most council members and the public have not seen this state-of-the-art
facility, we have taken some pictures. Tribal Vice-Chairman Glynn Crooks and
Tribal Administrator Bill Rudnicki will share a PowerPoint regarding the new ice
center so you can see it for yourself.
