1.2 DFFTNITTON:
A. This section describes the requirements for furnishing and installing frrestopping for
fire-rated construction. All firestopping work is included in this section. The work
includes:
L All openings in frre-rated floors and wall assemblies, both blank (empty) and
those accommodating penetrating items such as cables, conduits, pipes, ducts,
etc.
2, Expansion joints in fire-rated walls and floors allowing for joint movement.
3. Openings at each floor level in shafts or stairwells.
4. Openings at intersection of floor to wall and wall to roof deck.

A, Firestopping materials shall conform to Flame (F) and Temperature (T) ratings as
required by current local building code andlor Uniform Building Code, Section 4304e
and 4305 Penetrations, 1991 Edition, whichever is more restrictive, and is tested by
nationally accepted test agencies per ASTM E 814 or UL 1479 firetests, The F rating
must be a minimum of one (1) hour, but not less than the fire resistance rating of the
assembly being penetrated. T rating, when required by code authority, shall be based
on measurement of the temperature rise on the penetrating item(s). The fire test shall
be conducted with a minimum positive pressure differential of 0.01 inches of water
column.
B. Firestopping material shall be asbestos free and free of any PCB's,
C, Do not use any product containing solvents or that requires hazardous waste disposal.
D, Do not use Firestop Products which after curing, dissolve in water.
E, Firestopping shall be performed by a contractor and applicator trained or approved by
Firestop Manufacturer,
F. Equipment used shall be in accordance with Firestop Manufacturer 1 s written installation
instructions.

3,1 TNSPFrTToN/"PRF"PARATTON:
A. Examine the areas and conditions where Firestops are to be installed and notify the
Construction Manager of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion
of the work. Do not proceed with the work until unsatisfactory conditions have been
corrected by the contractor in a manner acceptable to the Architect.
1. Verify that penetration holes are approximately 1 1/2" larger diameter than the
penetrating element to allow space for wrap strip. Each trade must control sizing
of their penetration holes made to accommodate their penetrating items,
B. Verify that environmental conditions are safe and suitable for installation of Firestop
product(s) .
C. Provide primer as required which conforms to manufacturer's recommendation for
various substrates and conditions, Remove coating or sealers which may affect bond
of installation of fuestops in strict accordance with manufacturer's printed instructions.
D, Mask where necessary to protect adjoining materials.

B. RlIilcline Exterior Perimeters:
1. Firestopping shall be provided whether or not there are any clips, angles, plates,
or other members bridging or interconnecting the facing and floor systems, and
whether or not such items are continuous.
2, Where an exterior wall of composite type construction passes a perimeter
structural member, such as a girder, beam, or strut, and the finish on the interior
wall face does not continue up too close with the underside of the structural floor
above, thus interrupting the fire-resistive integrity of the wall system, and a space
would otherwise remain open between the interior face of the wall and lower edge
of the structural member, provide fires topping to continuously fill such open
space,
3. Install fuestops in strict accordance with accessories and methods used in actual
fire tests.
C. Interior W::llls ::lncl P::lrtitions:
1. Where a wall or partition is continuous past a structural floor, such as at
stairwells and vertical shafts, and a space would otherwise remain open between
the wall face and perimeter edge of the adjoining structural floor, providing
firestopping.
2. Provide firestopping whether or not there are any clips, angles, plates, or other
members bridging or interconnecting the wall and floor systems, and whether or
not such items are continuous.
3, Where the top edge of a fire-rated wallar partition abuts structure, provide
firestopping in conjunction with support angles. If tests are not available,
installation shall be similar to pipe penetrations.

2, Except for floors on grade, where a penetration occurs through a structural floor
or roof and a space would otherwise remain open between the surfaces of the
penetration and the edge of the adjoining structural floor or roof, provide
firestopping to fill such spaces in accordance with ASTM E 814.
3. Where penetrations occur at fire-rated walls or partitions of solid-type
construction, provide firestopping to completely fill spaces around the
penetration, in accordance with ASTM E 814.
4. Where penetrations occur at fire-rated walls or partitions of hollow-type
construction, provide firestopping to completely fill spaces around the
penetration, on each side of the wall or partition, in accordance with ASTM E
814.
5. These requirements for penetrations shall apply whether or not sleeves have been
provided, and whether or not penetrations are to be equipped with escutcheons
or other trim. If penetrations are sleeved, fires top annular space, if any, between
sleeve and wall of opening.
E. Provide firestopping to fill miscellaneous voids and openings in fITe-rated construction
in a manner essentially the same as specified herein before.
3.3 INSTAT.T.ATION:
A, (J~n~r31:
1. Installation of Firestops shall be performed by applicator/installers qualified and
trained by the manufacturer. Installation shall be performed in strict accordance
with manufacturer's detailed installation procedures.
2. Apply Firestops in accordance with fire test reports, fire resistance requirements,

4. Finish surfaces of firestopping which is to remain exposed in the completed work
to a uniform and level condition.
5. All areas of work must be accessible until inspection by the applicable code

conducted from February 16 through March 23, 1999, on an on-call basis.
The observations were performed by Dan Graham, a level II technician qualified as an International
Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) certified special inspector for structural steel and welding.

I have reviewed the progress of the Library and Resource Center. The
construction is following the design intention of the approved drawings.
Obviously, through the course of construction minor field modifications become
necessary. Fulco has been cooperative and fair in assisting with changes.
The carpet will be installed in the first week of September, followed immediately
by the installation of furniture, shelving and casework. We expect the final
punch list to be issued in mid September.
Public occupancy is scheduled for approximately mid October for the Library
and September 6th for the Resource Center.
The Staff will be shelving new material and alike prior to the Certificate of
Occupancy. A temporary e.o. will likely be necessary for this interim period.

completed and tested on September 14, 1999 by Jeff Dykstra. We certify that a functional test of
all devices wa<; performed and that the Fire Alarm System was working properly when it was

We realize that occasionally troubles do appear after a system has been in operation for a period
of time. If you should hear of any difficulties. we would appreciate it if you would notify us as
promptly as possible so that we may take care of these conditions at an early date.
