Prior Lake, MN 55372-1714 CITY COUNCIL AG NDA REPORT MEETING DATE: February 17, 2009 /~~ AGENDA #: 5 I (Revised) j~ `~ PREPARED BY: Frank Boyles, City Manager AGENDA ITEM: CONSIDER APPROVAL OF A RESOLUTION APPOINTING BOB JADER TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND CHARLES HOWLEY TO THE PLANNING COMMISSION. DISCUSSION: Introduction The purpose of this agenda item is to request Council consideration of the appointment of Bob Jader to the Economic Development Advisory Committee and Charles Howley to the Planning Commission. HiStorV At the February 2, 2009 meeting, the City Council approved appointments to the Economic Development Advisory Committee. Applications were solicited and interviews conducted. One candidate was unavailable for interview until this week. Vaughn Lemke has taken a job in Oklahoma and has submitted his resignation from the Planning Commission. Current Circumstances An application was submitted by Bob Jader indicating his interest to serve once again on the Economic Development Advisory Committee. He was out of state for several weeks and unable to interview prior to Monday, February 9. Councilor Erickson and I met with him on that date to conduct the interview. Vaughn participated in the earlier Planning Commission interviews with Councilmember LeMair, Danette and me. He suggested that we have a second candidate in the event he was relocated. After interviewing the four candidates, the committee agreed that Mr. Howley would be a good candidate for the Planning Commission. I spoke with him and he continues to have an interest in serving. ISSUES: The bylaws of the Economic Development Advisory Committee state that: "the committee shall consist of a number of members as may be determined and appointed by the Prior Lake City Council for a term of three (3) years from November 1 to October 31." With the addition of Mr. Jader, the Committee will have twelve members, eight of whom have new terms expiring in 2011 and four whose terms expire in 2009. We are seeking another member from the SMSC. If successful, this appointment will be brought to the Council. Planning Commissioners do. IMPACT: We have budgeted per diems based upon five members on the Planning Commission. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Adopt the resolution appointing Bob Jader to the Economic Development Advisory Committee and one adopting Charles Howley to the Planning Commission. 2. Take no action and provide direction to staff.
