Scott County Safe Communities Coalition
Dear City Council Members:
Motor vehicle crashes take a tremendous toll on the public, both in terms of
loss of life and economic costs. In the fall of 2002, the Minnesota Department
of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety provided federal grant funding for
the creation of the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition. Lead by Public
Health, the Coalition has increased its membership from 13 community
partners in 2002 to 32 partners in 2009.
The two primary goals of the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition are
to decrease the number of crash fatalities and injuries related to impaired
driving and to increase safe driving habits such as; wearing seat belts,
installing infant car seats correctly, slowing down and avoiding distracted
driving behaviors.
Although the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition has made great
strides towards the goal of creating safer roads and driving behaviors, we still
have a lot of work to do. Twelve fatal crashes occurred in Scott County in
2008. Five of these fatalities were not using safety equipment (seat belts,
helmets, etc), three fatalities were motorcycle crashes, and six involved
alcohol, drugs or both.
It takes a whole community to build a truly safe community. Dr. Wilcox's
presentation will provide updates to the council regarding some of the work
we have done in your community and to encourage local support and
involvement with our strategies/activities.
We appreciate you giving us the opportunity to present to you. For more
information or to discuss partnering with the Coalition, please contact Linda
Schwichtenberg, Scott County Safe Communities Coordinator at 952-496-
8338.
Sincerely,
Linda Schwichtenberg RN, BSN, PHN
