Re: Porch Deck on the East Side of the Club House at 15451 NW Howard
Lake Road in Prior Lake, MN.
Dear Don:
I have reviewed the above deck which had fuiled where the support framing at the club house
foundation was evidently inadequately filstened to the outside of the club house foundation wall. In
checking the framing of the porch, it is at present inadequate to support a loading of 100 psf (pounds
per square foot) which I recommend based on review ofUBC requirements and my knowledge of the
possible and probable loadings that occur where porch and patio decks are concerned. With this in
mind, I suggest the fullowing corrections to the porch framing and support.
1. The support framing at the club house has been adequately beefed up with additional bolts and lag
screws and needs no further suppport.
2. The joists should be added between the existing joists (which are now at 24" on center). Either
additional 2"x8" joists of stress grade t;, = 1,000 psi or 2"xl 0" joists of construction grade SPF
lumber should be placed at a 12" spacing (between the existing joists). Bridging should be nailed
in at center spans of the joists.
3. The interior three-2"xl0" beam should be increased to five-2"xl0" members over the south 3
colunms. The balance of the beam over the north 3 colunms should be increased to fuur-2"xl0"
members.
4. The outer 2-2"xlO" beam (eastern-most) should be increased to 3-2"xlO" over all colunms.
5. The colunms at the basement drive entrance (four-4"x6" posts) should be increased in size to
6"x6' colunms. This can be done by using a new 6"x6" posts or by adding a 2"x6' to the side of
the 4"x6" posts by nailing and gluing the added timber, being sure to make positive contact with
the upper beams and the concrete below the posts.
6. Add 2"x6" diagonal (45") bracing to the top 2 ft of the posts; anchoring the bracing to the posts
and to the deck beams and joists in both the north-south and east-west directions.
This should provide the patio deck with a capability of supporting a 100 pound per square live load
including the weight of the deck. I hereby certify that this specification has been prepared by me and
that I am a duly registered Professional Civil Engineer under the laws of the State of Minnesota. If you
