HomeMy WebLinkAbout5J - Election Judge Appointments MEETING DATE: AGENDA #: PREPARED BY: PRESENTER: AGENDA ITEM: DISCUSSION: 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT JULY 19, 2010 5J JANET RINGBERG, ACCOUNTING CLERK FRANK BOYLES, CITY MANAGER CONSIDER APPROVAL OF ELECTION JUDGE APPOINTMENTS FOR AUGUST 10,2010 PRIMARY AND NOVEMBER 2,2010 GENERAL ELECTIONS Introduction The purpose of this agenda item is to consider approval of election judge appointments for the primary election on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, and the general election on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Historv In the past, primary elections have always been held the second Tuesday of September. The state statutes were changed last year to allow for more time between the primary and general elections, thereby moving up the primary election date by one month to the second Tuesday of August. The statute was also changed to allow for 45 days of absentee voting before all elections instead of 30 days for absentee voting. Current Circumstances The primary and general elections scheduled for this fall are for the purpose of electing candidates for the following offices: Federal United States Representative State Governor Secretary of State Attorney General State Senator State Representative Judicial District Court Judges Citv Two Council Members As part of the election process, the City Council must authorize the appointment of election judges to conduct election day activities. Included with this agenda report is listing of all judges and the precincts they have been assigned to. Judges with the symbol @ next to their name indicates they are a chair for their precinct. The judges will report to their assigned precinct location one hour prior to the poll opening for set-up preparation. The staff has attempted to balance the election judges by political party to the extent possible. Judges are paid $8.50 per hour as approved within this year's operating budget.
