detectors on the supply and return side of the condenser fan at Grainwood Elementary. Jerry
stated as long as the air is not distributed mside the building, &moke detectors are not required.

plenum, supply ducts shall be provided extending from the plenum to registers on
other floor levels.
2. Such spaces shall be cleaned of all loose combustible scrap material and shall
be tightly and substantially enclosed.
3. The enclosing material of the under-floor space, including the sidewall
insulation, shall be not more flammable than I-inch (nominal) wood boards
(flame-spread index of 200). Installation of foam plastics is regulated by the
Building Code.
4. Access shall be through an opening in the floor and shall be not less than 24
inches by 24 inches.
5. A furnace supplying warm air to under-floor space shall be equipped with an
automatic control which will start the air-circulating fan when the air in the
furnace bonnet reaches a temperature not higher than 150oF. Such control shall be
one that cannot be set higher than 150oF.
6. A furnace supplying warm air to such space shall be equipped with an
approved temperature limit control that will limit outlet air temperature to 200 oF.
7. A noncombustible receptacle shall be placed below each floor opening into
the air chamber, and such receptacle shall conform to the following:
A. The receptacle shall be securely suspended from the floor members and
shall be not more than 18 inches below the floor opening.
S. The area of the receptacle shall extend 3 inches beyond the opening on all
sides.
C. The perimeter of the receptacle shall have a vertical lip at least I inch high
at the open sides if it is at the level of the bottom of the joists, or 3 inches
high if the receptacle is suspended.
8. Floor registers shall be designed for easy removal in order to give access for
cleaning the receptacles.
9. Exterior walls and interior stud partitions shall be fire-stopped at the floor.
10. Each wall register shall be connected to the air chamber by a register box or
boot.
11. A duct conforming with Section 1002 shall extend from the furnace supply
outlet at least 6 inches below combustible framing.
12. The entire ground surface of the under-floor space shall be covered with a
vapor barrier having a minimum thickness of 4 mils and a flamespread rating of
200 or Jess.
13. Fuel-gas lines and plumbing waste c1eanouts are not located within the
space.
* Automatic Shutoffs
t. Sec, 1009, (a) When Required. Each single system providing heating or
~ cooling air in excess of2,000 cubic feet per minute in Group A, Divisions 1,2 and
~ 2.1; Group B, Division 2; Group E; Group I and Group R, Division I Occupancies
* shall be equipped with an automatic shutoff activated by smoke detectors. When
~ the system serves more than one occupancy, automatic shutoff shall be provided.
EXCEPTIONS: I. Automatic shutoffs need not be installed when all rooms
have direct exit to the exterior of the building.
2. Automatic shutoffs need not be installed in systems specifically designed for
smoke control.

(b) Smoke Detection. Smoke detectors required by Subsection (a) shall be
installed in the main return-air duct ahead of any outside-air inlet or they may be
installed in each room or space served by the return-air duct. Detectors shall also
be installed in the supply duct, downstream of the filters. Activation of any
detector shall cause the air-moving equipment to automatically shut down.
