This report documents the results of the testing. Testing WEAL performed two (2) Field Apparent Sound Transmission Class (ASTC) tests to evaluate the airborne sound isolation of the wall assemblies between dwelling units. Testing was performed on August 31, 2011. WEAL tested in strict accordance with ASTM standard E336, "Standard Test Method for Measurement of Airborne Sound Insulation in Buildings ". WEAL is accredited by the United States Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) for this test procedure. WEAL's test results are shown in the following table. Codes and Standards: The State of Minnesota has adopted the International Building Code (IBC), requires that wall assemblies provide airborne sound insulation equal to or greater than ASTC 45 for field tested assemblies between residential spaces. Evaluation: All of the tested assemblies exceed the minimum State of Minnesota minimum code standards for airborne sound isolation between dwelling units. These tests satisfy the acoustical requirements set forth in the State Building Code and no modification of the structures is required. 1711 Sixteenth Street • Santa Monica California 90404 • tel: 310.450.1733 • fax: 310.396.3424 • www.veneklasen.com Veneklasen Associates Station Place, Prior Lake, MN Acoustical Testing Summary September 5, 2011 Page 2 We trust this report meets your needs at this time. The tests were conducted on August 30, 2011. Details of the tests are contained in this report. WEAL is accredited by NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program) Lab Code 100256 -0 for these test procedures (ASTM E 336 and ASTM E 1007). 2.0 TEST SUMMARY A summary of the test results is shown in the table below. Details are presented in the attached graphs and tables. Table 1— Acoustical Field Testing Results Test Condition Test Specimen Location ASTC Number Fl 1 -555 Demising Wall 3961 and 3963 Station Place 61 Great Room F11 556 Demising Wall 3959 and 3961 Station Place 65 Bedroom Report must be distributed in its entirety except with written authorization from Western Electro- Acoustic Laboratory. The results contained in this report are limited to the measurement of the noise reduction and impact insulation of the items tested. WEAL provides no warranties, expressed or implied, regarding the structural integrity or fitness of these assemblies for a specific installation. Any advertising which utilizes this test report or test data must not imply product certification or endorsement by WEAL, NVLAP, NIST or the U.S. Government. The State of Minnesota requires that within residential spaces the ASTC values be a minimum of 45 if field tested. All the structures tested satisfy the minimum Minnesota standards for Sound Transmission Class. 3.0 TEST PROCEDURES 3.1 Transmission Loss Tests All demising wall, corridor wall tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM E336, "Standard Test Method for Measurement of Airborne Sound Insulation in Buildings ", except as noted below. The Field Sound Transmission Class (ASTC) is a single number rating derived from measured values of Transmission Loss (TL) between two spaces. WEAL personnel made no attempt to measure or limit flanking paths. The sound pressure levels in the source room and receiving room were measured by manually sweeping the microphone in each space per section 10.2 & 10.3 of ASTM E 336. The sampling period utilized within the rooms was 60 seconds. Fifteen (15) microphone positions were used to measure reverberation times (RT) in the receiving room. During the tests, ambient level measurements were made in the receiving room and receiving room sound pressure levels were adjusted as necessary. Scope of Recommendations The basis of this report is as follows: a) Visual Methods Governing Building Code The 2000 International Residential Code was utilized for the overall building code. The structural design loads were taken from ASCE Standard "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures" (ASCE 7 -05). Material Specific Standards 1.) American Concrete Institute "ACI 318 -99" for concrete 2.) American Concrete Institute "ACI 530 -99" for concrete masonry units. Site Visits On February 12, 2011, Glenn M. Johnson, P.E. performed a preliminary site visit at 2:30 p.m. The weather at this time was 36 degrees F. The following was noted: a) Snow removal efforts cleaned off a majority of the slab -on- grade, however ice and water remained on much of the flat surfaces. (Photo 1) b) Several cracks were observed with -in the slab -on- grade, with some spalls occurring along the crack route (Photos 2 and 3) c) Numerous anchor bolts were missing, bent or removed. Mr. David Taylor First State Bank March 15, 2011 Page 5 On February 16, 2011, Glenn M. Johnson, P.E. performed a site visit at 3:30 p.m. The weather at this time was 52 degrees F. The following was noted: a) Several cracks were observed in the slab -on- grade, with a width measured at 0.040 inches. ((Photos 4, 5, and 6) b) The slab -on -grade contained heave in the area of the Kestrel end unit (3959 Station Place NW) facing to the east. This heave was measured at 0.75 inches at the highest point, located at 12' -9" from the north -east corner of this unit. The heave sloped down to level at the north -east corner and at the edge of unit 3959 Station Place NW.(Photos 7, 8 and 9) c) Anchor bolts were missing, bent or removed. On March 4, 2011, Glenn M. Johnson, P.E., performed a site visit at 3:30 p.m. The weather at this time was 28 degrees F. The following was noted: a) The 4" high concrete wall top was cracked on the North side near the Northwest building corner. b) The 4" high concrete wall top was cracked at the Northwest building corner. Observations and Their Significance The overall condition of the in -situ elements was good. The width of the cracks with -in the slab -on -grade is not unusual for an unreinforced concrete element. These crack widths do not represent any type of material or schematic anomaly. The spalls are not a cause for concern, caused by movement due to temperature differentials after initial crack formation. The slab -on -grade heave is an isolated occurrence, and is not representative of material or schematic anomaly. Its primary cause is unexplained at this time; however it is probable that a small, isolated pocket of expansive sub base in combination with run off moisture caused this heave. It should be noted that the existing footings are placed with approximately 3 feet of soil cover and are not exposed to view. All information regarding the in -situ footings and walls in this report was taken from the Wensco drawings. Mr. David Taylor First State Bank March 15, 2011 Page 6 Recommendations It is recommended that the following repairs be completed prior to wood frame construction; a) Route and seal all slab -on -grade cracks with a width of 0.010 inches or greater b) Provide ' /2" diameter expansion anchors with minimum 7" concrete embedment to maintain an anchor spacing of 6' -0" on center (o.c.) typical. Locate new expansion anchors 12" from corners, typical. c) Provide tarps or other waterproof covering over the slab -on -grade area containing the heave. Place pallets of construction materials or contained soil volume to load this area in a controlled manner to a near level condition. Grind to a smooth condition any humps or projections. d) - Vertically drill and epoxy #4 reinforcement bars x 2' -0" long at 10" o.c. into the concrete wall on the west side of the crack. (Photo 10) Install epoxy per written manufacturer recommendations. Provide 2" clear concrete cover to reinforcement. e) Drill and epoxy #4 reinforcement bars x 2' -0" long at 8" o.c. (horizontal) into the cracked concrete wall top. Install epoxy per written manufacturer recommendations. Provide 2" clear concrete cover to reinforcement. Summary It is my professional opinion that once the recommendations listed above are completed, the in -situ foundations and slab -on -grade elements are structurally adequate to safely support the intended design loads per the applicable building code.
