At the time of the inspection, the proposed build area had been excavated to frost footing depth, with forms and reinforcement placed at approximately 21" x 10" - W/ (2) - #4 rods. Soils as observed at the base of the footing lines consisted of a sandy clay loam, with isolated areas of darker horizon "B" soils in the north north /east. Soils were stable, although high in moisture from recent rain. To assess the strength of the soils, a 518 inch diameter smooth probe was used to penetrate the footing lines at random. With full body weight applied, the probes indicated a penetration average of 6" — 7 ", increasing to 12" — 14" within the north section of the building pad. The load bearing capacity of the soils were evaluated by dynamic cone penetrometer tests conducted at the base of the footing lines. The dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), employs a eight kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter diameter conical point into the soil, with the penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the DCP readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded and a N -value derived. This N -value is an empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows per foot (BPF) standard penetration soil boring test. We would however anticipate an increase in soil strength as soil moisture levels decrease. It is recommended that the width of the rear footing line be increased to 24" and (1) additional reinforcement rod be installed. It is also recommended that full reinforcement wraps or crossings be included within the footings at the building corners, and rod splice lengths placed at minimum of 36 bar diameters. Our observations and subsequent soil evaluation for the project, is limited in scope to soil conditions observed at footing elevation within the excavation, and to the depths achieved by shallow probes and dynamic cone penetrometer tests. Therefore, we are unable to assess sub -grade soils, which may be encountered by borings conducted as part of a standard subsurface geotechnical investigation.
