City of Prior Lake
We moved to Prior Lake in 1996. At that time, our property taxes were $3,600. This yea, we will pay
property taxes of $9,240, an increase of 256%! According to the current tax appraisal, our home value
has increased approximately 60% in the same period. Other than upgrading the interior of the home, no
other improvements have been made.
1 am age 68 and we ae living on a relatively fixed income. We enjoy living in Prior Lake but considering
the present rate of taxes and likely future increases, we feel we are being firced to consider moving to a
lower taxed part of the Twin Cities.
The growth in the rate of taxation, in consideration of the much lower growth in the value of the home
seems very unfair. Why has this happened? Whatever fonnula is used to calculate the taxes needs to be
revisited to make the taxation more equitable, especially for older citizens of the city.
