Dear Mr. Jacobson:
As requested, I have reviewed the proposed layout for the above referenced deck system. It is my
understanding there is some concern regarding the cantilevered joist condition which does not conform
to the prescriptive tables located in the International Building Code (IRC 2006).
You have provided me with a plan indicating the location of the joists and the anticipated cantilevers.
You intend to construct the deck with 2 x 10, Southern Yellow Pine joists, spaced at 16" o.c. throughout.
In examining the worst possible loading case (3' -6" cantilever with 12' -0" backspan), I have determined
that the joist size is adequate and the anticipated deflection at the end of the cantilever should be less
than 1 /4 ".
The ledger at the face of the house is existing and is intended to remain in place. As the loads to this
end of the deck joists will not exceed that of the original reactions, it should continue to perform
adequately. Simpson LUS210 or USP JL210 face mount joist hangers both have sufficient load- carrying
capacity for the joist -to- ledger connection.
The existing support beam which runs below the ends of the cantilevered joists consists of 3 — 2 x 10
members. The members are continuous over the two interior posts. I have reviewed this condition and
found the beam may remain in place without modification. The 6 x 6 treated posts are also noted as
existing and bear on 18" x 48" concrete piers. Both of these items also have sufficient capacity to
support the new deck layout.
Based on this information, your proposed layout is acceptable and should perform satisfactorily under
the requirements of the current Minnesota State Building Code. Please contact me if you have
questions or require additional information.
