Dear Mr. Hazelton:
This letter is being sent to discuss our typical engineered section for the proposed boulder retaining wall
at the 14955 Jeffers Pass project in Prior Lake, Minnesota. This design is based on wall layout
information provided by you on June 11, 2013.
The proposed boulder retaining wall is located on the north side of the house and will abut the house near
the northwest corner. The wall will have a maximum exposed height of about 6.5 feet. A minimum wall
batter /setback of 18° (-3 inches /vertical foot) should be used. The walls should also be embedded (buried
below grade) a minimum of 6 inches. Slopes as noted below will be present at the top and bottom of the
walls. No groundwater or other surcharge loads have been designed for the walls. If site conditions vary
from what is shown on the Typical Section, please call me to discuss other options.
Refer to industry standard practice references for installation information, specifications, and details.
- Boulders shall be placed to avoid continuous joint planes in vertical or lateral directions.
- Each boulder shall bear on two or more rocks below it with good flat -to -flat contact.
- Compact any structural fill place behind the drainage zone to 95% standard proctor.
- Install woven landscape fabric behind the boulders to limit soil migration through the wall face.
- Drainage stone, if utilized, shall consist of clean 3/4" to 1.5" crushed stone
The design of the wall system assumes the following:
- Soil conditions: Sandy Silt/Clay, friction angle = 30.0 degrees, unit weight of 120.0 lb/113
- Allowable soil bearing capacity = 2,000 psf
- No surcharge loading behind wall
- Slope at bottom of wall = 4:1; Slope at top = 10:1 ?`
