MAY 6, 1995 AGENDA #: PREP ARED BY: SUBJECT: INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this Agenda item is to authorize staff to proceed with the preparation of specifications and the solicitation of bids for the following playgrounds: 1. Carriage Hills Park 2. W oodridge Park 3. Northwood Park 4. Indian Ridge Park 5. Green Oaks Park BACKGROUND: The first two playgrounds on the above list were carry over projects from the 1995 Parks and Trails Capital Improvement Program (C.I.P.). In 1995 Carriage Hills and W oodridge Parks were not as yet developed and not ready for playground equipment. Council approved the addition of Northwood, Indian Ridge, and Green Oaks at the March 18, 1996 meeting as an amendment to the 1996 Parks and Trails C.I.P. DISCUSSION: This new playground equipment will be modular, will meet the new safety standards, and provide the accessibility requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Currently we have free standing swings, slides, and merry- go-rounds. By switching to this newer style of playground we can provide a safer more attractive piece of equipment, as well as provide more activities for the children. The alternatives are as follows: 1. Approve Resolution 96-47 authorizing design and preparation of plans and specification and authorize the solicitation of bids for the 1996 playground equipment. 2. Table this Agenda item for a specific reason. 3. Deny this Agenda item for a specific reason. Staff recommends Alternative No.1. This alternative would allow us the opportunity to provide updated playground equipment which will meet all of the current safety and accessibility needs. The total estimated cost of the five playgrounds is $90,000. This dollar amount would include the installation by the contractor. In the past playground equipment has been installed by Parks Maintenance staff, however, it is more cost effective to have the equipment supplier provide the installation. By including installation in the contract it allows maintenance staff more time for daily maintenance operations. The funds for this playground equipment are available through the Capital Park Fund. Motion and second to approve Resolution 96-47. Upon receipt of the bids the City Council will be asked to award the contract.
