P ARK BASEBALL FIELD "VETERANS FIELD"

INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this agenda item is to consider the naming of
the baseball field at Memorial Park as well as the fields at the
Pond's Park.
DISCUSSION:
At the April 8, 1996 Parks Advisory Committee meeting
members of Prior Lake V.F.W. Post 6208 requested that the
baseball field at Memorial Park be named "Veterans Field".
V.F.W. members stated that the Post would like the field
dedicated to the memory of all veterans of the armed forces
from Prior Lake.
At a previous meeting the P.A.C. had discussed the
possibility of naming this field "Mangan Field" in memory
of former Park and Recreation Director Bill Mangan.
Following the request of the V.F.W. the P.A.C. thought that
it would be best if the fields at the Pond's Park were named
"Mangan Fields" and the Memorial Park field be named
"Veterans Field".
Attached is a resolution from the V.F.W. Post 6208 and the
American Legion Post #447 requesting that the baseball field
at Memorial Park be named "Veterans Field".
Representatives of the post will be present to share their
views with the City Council.

The City Council has historically been reluctant to name
parks for individuals or organizations. The council did
however add "Lions" to Sand Point Park and VFW to
Memorial Park in recognition's of the financial contributions
these organizations have made to each. Naming the fields is
consistent with this earlier action. Both circumstances are
unique. A new policy could be prepared to guide such
decisions in the future.
1. Deny the request of the V.F. W. and American Legion and
do not name the field at Memorial Park.
2. Deny the recommendation of the Parks Advisory
Committee and do not name the fields at Pond's Park.
3. Approve the request of the V.F. W. and American Legion
and the recommendation of the Parks Advisory Committee
and name the baseball field at Memorial Park "Veterans
Field", and name the fields at Pond's Park "Mangan
Fields" .
Staff recommends Alternative #3. Staff should be directed to
prepare a policy on the naming of City facilities such as
Streets, Parks, Playfields, etc. to govern future requests.
Motion and second to name the baseball field at Memorial
Park "Veterans Field" and name the athletic fields at the
Pond's Park "Mang ,f Fields". Directions should also be

Motion by Norm Borchardt end seconded by Gary Golay that a
resolution by the Prior Lake VFW Post 6208 be sent to the City
of Prior Lake:
That Memorial Park and any adjacent land purchased
. in the.:future be named Memorial Park, and the "ball
diamond" within Memorial Park be n8med Veterans Field.
Motion passed unanimously, April 8, 1996 at the Post 6208
