Historv This agenda item is to accept the Shoreland Habitat Grant we have received from the MN Department of Natural Resources. This grant will provide funding to restore the lakeshore at Sand Point Beach between the boat access and the fishing pier. The grant money is providing for aquatic planting materials, erosion control devices and the experienced labor from the MN Conservation Corps. The Soil and Water Conservation District is donating labor and technical support and the City of Prior Lake is donating labor and a cash contribution. Current Circumstances Sand Point Beach is a favorite public beach access to Prior Lake. Staff would like to take a pro-active approach to keeping the area in pristine condition. The goal of this work would be to reduce the shoreland and upland erosion and improve the quality of shoreland habitat. The project involves the restoration of aquatic and terrestrial buffers. Plans include planting aquatic vegetation, stabilizing eroding lake bank, removing invasive woody plants from degraded maple-basswood plant community and stabilizing groundlayer with seed and plugs. The 2000 Comprehensive Lake Management Plan includes goals promoting a natural approach for shoreland preservation, promoting restoration of altered shorelines, and generating a shared community vision and importance of good shoreland stewardship. Another goal of this grant is to provide shoreland habitat education. The grant encourages volunteers to participate in the planting and restoration project. In a joint effort with the Prior Lake/Spring Lake Watershed District, the City will be sponsoring a Shoreland Restoration Workshop for the residents later this summer. According to Shannon Lotthammer of the watershed district, all efforts to improve the shoreland habitat are greatly encouraged and supported by the PLSLWD.
