Re: General Review of Glass Handrails use in New Deck Construction

Dear Mr. Pahl:
The purpose of this letter is to report the findings of a structural engineering review of the
use of tempered glass in deck railing panels.
ASSIGNMENT
Ulteig Engineers Inc. (UEI) has been retained to provide a structural engineering review of
the tempered glass that The Deck Crew uses in the construction of handrails on new decks
as directed by Mark Pahl.
BACKGROUND
Mark Pahl, of The Deck Crew, constructs several decks and patios throughout the Twin
Cities Metro Area. He has encountered several situations where the City Inspections
Department requires a Registered Engineer to verify the tempered glass used on the
railings is structuratly adequate and meets the requirements of the Code.
Mark Pahl wishes to have an independent structural engineering review of the tempered
glass placement within the handrail system.
OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS
1. The following information was provided to Jason Hanlon on March 25, 2004 by Mark
Pahl:
a. The glass is ~" tempered glass per ASTM E 1300
b. The overall height of the glass will range between a 33.75" minimum and a
35.5" maximum.

c. The overall length of the glass will range between a 22" minimum and a 60"
maximum.
d. The design loading shall be 90 mph wind, Exposure B with a 3-second gust,
per the 2003 Minnesota State Building Code with the amended 2000
International Residential Code (IRe)
e. The glass will be supported evenly at the top and the bottom.
f. The railing members will be structurally adequate to support the design loads
and designed by others.
PROFESSIONAL OPINION
2. It is my professional engineering opinion that:
a. The 1/4" tempered glass will be structurally adequate to support a 90mph
wind load, Exposure B, within the limits described above.

3. The information, observations, and opinions stated in this report are based on
information provided to Jason Hanlon.
4. The observations and opinions expressed in this report were based on my
professional engineering judgment and professional practice.
