ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT
MEETING DATE: January 23, 2014
AGENDA #: 4.b.
PREPARED BY: Casey McCabe, Community Development Specialist
AGENDA ITEM: TRACK COMMERCIAL VACANCIES
DISCUSSION: Introduction
The EDA has directed the EDAC to track and publish a list of commercial buildings in the commu-
nity with vacant space for lease.
History
Staff from the City of Prior Lake has previously tracked commercial buildings with vacancy and
published the listing on the Economic Development page of the City website. It was found to be
very time consuming and difficult to keep accurate data on the available properties.
During the December 5 EDAC meeting, committee members directed staff to consider options
th
to track commercial vacancies and provide an update on this item during the next regular EDAC
meeting.
Current Circumstances
City staff has sent a letter and property information sheet to property owners and real estate agents
representing 22 Prior Lake commercial and industrial properties that staff is either aware of a
current vacancy or a vacancy existed within the past 12 months. Staff requested the property
information sheet be completed for each property that has available space and returned to City
Hall by January 24 so the information can be compiled and made available on the city website.
th
Conclusion
Staff is also proposing to develop a fillable form, which will be made available on the City website,
so property owners or agents can fill in the requested information and have their property included
on the available property inventory.
Having an available list of all commercial properties in the City of Prior Lake would be a valuable
resource for city staff and the Scott County First Stop Shop.
ISSUES: Staff expects it will be difficult to keep an accurate and complete listing of available commercial
and industrial property.
FINANCIAL Staff time devoted to the project.
