AGENDA ITEM: PRESENTATION OF PRIOR LAKE ROTARY CLUB DONATION TO THE ERIE
AVENUE RAIN GARDEN PARK PROJECT.
PRESENTATION: Rain gardens are a city project that will help manage storm water runoff in the
Downtown area, but the location of the Erie Avenue project makes it a key
component in fulfilling one of the goals of our 2020 Vision and Strategic Plan -
tying Downtown to the Lake. As such, it became important that the project be
distinctive. Thanks in large measure to the Prior Lake Rotary Club, it will include
amenities such as a fountain and seating area, entry pavilion with benching, and
a new trail connection to Lakefront Park, in addition to over 1800 perennial
plantings.
Last year, the Prior Lake Rotary Club contacted City staff looking for a way to
contribute to their community in recognition of the centennial of Rotary
International. After working with staff and evaluating several options, the Rotary
Centennial committee concluded that the Erie Avenue Rain Garden Project was
the one that best met their goals and selection criteria. They recommended the
site to their Board who authorized its contribution.
That contribution is significant. The Rotary will contribute $32,500 in cash, 2
benches recognizing the Rotary International Centennial (valued at $2500), and
the primary labor for planting all of the 1800 perennials in the rain garden (valued
at $5000). All total, the value of the contribution is $40,000, which is half of the
estimated project costs of $80,000.
But this is just one of the ways that the Prior Lake Rotary Club has contributed to
our community over the past years. Rotary is an organization of local business
leaders whose pledge is "Service Above Self'. Locally, the Prior Lake Rotary
Club is responsible for the annual (and very popular) D.A.R.E. Bik-a-thon, the
proceeds of which go to help fund the D.A.R.E. program in our schools. They
also sponsor and participate annually in highway cleanup on County Road 21
from TH 13 to CSAH 42. On a national and international level, the Prior Lake
Rotary contributes to programs helping populations throughout the world by
providing vaccines, sanitary facilities, prosthetic devices, and surgical
corrections.
Prior Lake Rotary President Gerry Wersal, members of the Prior Lake Rotary
Board, and members of the Rotary Centennial Committee will be present to
present the City with the first installment of their donation ($15,000). The final
installment will be received in July corresponding with the new Rotary fiscal year.
