Per phone conversation with Jason at Firo-Guard Sprinkler, Jason stated
you need some information pertaining to storage and storage racks.
Enclosed you will find a diagram for carpet racks for warehouses #141 &:. #127
with locations to where they will be placed. From my understanding, storage racks can
not e:Kcced more than 12'.0" in height. (which they will indicate.)
For warehouses #117 & #107. tenants have not been finalized at this time. I will
make sure that they will not exceed over 12'-0".
I hope this information is helpful for you. If you have any questions, or concerns,
please do not hesitate to call me at 651-406-4400.
Sincerely,

RE: Fountain Hills American Lighting
Suite 201 storage addition
Following' are the results of the preliminary plan review for the American Lighting
addition. Our review was based on the Minnesota State Building Code (MSBC) which
ll<1op'ted with amendments the 2000 International Building Code (mC) with handicap
regulations of the Minnesota Accessibility Code Chapter 1341, Minnesota State 2000
Energy Code Chapter 7676. Also requirements of the Minnesota State Fire Code (MSFC)
which adopted with amendments the 2000 International Fire Code (IFC), and the National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA),
1. A structural engineer must show details of structural posts, "1"- beams, pilaster,
footings, their connections, and the connections to existing foundations.
2, Correct code review to indicate S-l instead ofS-2 occupancy do to product composition.
LB.C. 311
3. Correct allowable area calculations to reflect unlimited area LB.C. 507.3.
4. Revise detail 3/2.2 to address existing conditions and floor elevations.
5. Change 2nd floor framing detail and indicate roof framing plan on sheet S-1.
6, Provide details of 42" guards and their design at the second floor opening and at the
interior and exterior stairways. Indicate the 34" to 3S" grippable, continuous handrails.
LB.C. 1003.2.12.
7. Submit signed fire/smoke alarm, emergency lighting, exit signs and sprinkler plans. All
require a separate permit submittals and review. May be submitted at a later date.
S. Special inspections will be required on soils, footings, structural floors and all structural
steel with their connections. LB.C. Chapter 17.

9. Provide a plan for the storage configuration that is being used in the storage area.
10, The clearance between the sprinkler head deflector and the top of storage shall be 18"
or greater, National Fire Protection Association NFPA 13 section 5-5.6.
II, This addition is proposed to be non-heated, As such, Chapter 7676 of the Minnesota
State Energy Code does not have to be met. Be aware that a dry pipe suppression
system will need to be installed in the addition.
12. In a recent site visit to American Lighting, it was noted that the rack storage has
increased to high rack storage. This requires in-rack sprinklers, early suppression fast
response or other approved system that meets the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA 13) section 5-5. This is required for storage areas where the top of the pile
storage is over 12 feet above the floor or grade. We are aware of the shortage of storage
space at this time and is the reason for your addition, but this violation will have to be
corrected as soon as possible. A response letter from Wensco dated September 20,2000
indicated that the storage would not exceed over 12' -0".
All items pertaining to the building must be addressed before a building permit is issued.
The Planning and the Engineering departments have accepted the plan. Call ifthere are any
questions at 952-447-9856.
Sincerely,
Bernie 1. Feidt

SOIL OBSERVATION AND CONCRETE AND MASONRYTESnNG
~ODUCTIONl
.
This report presents the results of our observation and testing of the soli. cOncrete, and
masonty components (Le. grout and mortar) for the addition to the Fountain Hills
American Ughtlng building in Prior l.ake, Minnesota. Our work in the field was
authorized by you on May 6, 2004. Our scope of services was limited to the following:
1. Observe the soils exposed within the mass excavation for the proposed building
addition on an Intannittent basis.
2. Perform shallow hand auger borings to aid In judging whether the exposed solis are
suitable for support of the anticipated building loads.
3. Perfonn intermittent compaction testing of fill soils placed to establish final grades.
4. Perform intermittent testing of site concrete placements (i.e. foundation walls, slab)
for the building addition.
5. Perform compression testing of masonry components (i.a.. grout and mortar).
CONCkUSIONS:
Based on our observations and hand auger borings, It is our opinion the soils exposed
within the completed excavations for the planned building addition com;isted of sandy
lean clays and clayey sands. These solis were Judged suitable for support of the
anticipated fill and foundation loadings of 2500 psf.
The compaction tests results meet the project specifications of 95% Standard Proctor
density In the areas tested.
~OJECT INFO",ATION:
The proposed ~uilding addition extends off the southeast comer of the Fountain Hills
American Lighting building in Prior Lake, Minnesota. We understand the approximate
overall dimensions of the building addition to be 35' x 60'. We further understand that
the footings will be placed such that to match those of the existing building. The

footings wlll be placed to provide normal fro
exert a net allowable soil bearing pressur
depth and were designed to
ds per square foot (psf).
On May 6 and 7, 2004, soil engineers and technicians from our firm observed the salls
exposed during the mass excavation for the proposed building addition. At the time of
our first site visit the footings for the building addition had already been placed_ We
performed several shallow 31i' hand auger borings adjacent to the footings into the
sUbgrade for the building addltlon. The observed soils and those retrieved by our
shallow hand auger borings were visually and manually classified in general accordance
with ASTM:D2488, and estimates were made of their strength properties. The exposed
soils, in the observed areas, were judged to consist of sandy lean clays and clayey
sands with various amounts of gravel. The sandy lean clayS were of firm consistency
and the clayey sands were medium dense, based on the resistance estimated by our
hand auger probes. The observed soils appear suitable for support of the fill and 1./
structural loadings.
On May 6 and 10,2004. engineering technicians from our firm performed plastic
concrete testing. The results of the tests are attached to this report.
COMPACTIQN TESTING:
Nine (9) soil compaction tests were performed within compacted fill placed to establish
the planned slab grade for the building addition. The compaction tests were evaluated
according to the Moisture Density Relation of Soli as deslgnatec! by ASTM: 0698-00
(Standard Proctor).
The results of the tests, which are attached, Indicate the reco!"meo.ded comDaction V
level of 95% of the Standard Proctor was attained forihe bullding pad areas.
COt<lCRETE AN)) MASO~RY TES~
Attached are plastic dally sheets documenting testing and sampling of plastic concrete
placed between May 6 and 10,2004. Our engineering technician performed tests for
slump of the concrete mixture (ASTM: C143), air content of the concrete mixtUre
(ASTM:C231), measured the temperature of the concrete, and cast the necessary
concrete cylinders for the pUTPOse of compressive strength testing. The field tests were
taken prior to concrete placement unless otherwise noted on the attaChed sheets. The
results of our field testing of plastic concrete is shown on the attached dally report
10nns. This report also indicates the concrete mix design, the concrete supplier, the
location of concrete placement, and the method of concrete placed.
Concrete test cylinders were temporarily stored at the project and 1hen submitted to our
laboratory for moist curing and compressive stl'9ngth testing. The results of our

I talked with the inspector today, and he confirmed to me that we could go ahead and install the permanent
shelving, and stock materials on the shelves in the addition.
The "final touches" on the project will be completed in the next few days.
The boxes that are stacked over 12 feet high in the existing warehouse will need to be taken down before a
formal CO will be issued.
Thank you!

Mike,
The following are reports for the structural steel inspections. taken plat:e on June 16 and June 22 for the
American Ughting Addition In Prior lake. One of the boIt9d connections on the southeast corner of the
addition (2nd lIoor) was not torqued. This should be corrected prior to covering up Ihe area with Inlerior

All other balled connections were satisfactory and the puddle welds on the decking were also satisfactory.
Let me k~ave any questions 651-248-2846. Thank you.

One bolt was previously found to be not torqued within this area on
our previous inspection on June 22, 2004. The stael erector
i(lfonned us that they could not access the one bolt with an impact
hammer due to the confi9uration of the constnUction. The steel
erector tightened the bolt manually. During our further inspection
the bolt appears to be adequately tightened and the connection
appears satisfactory.
