G.,.g. -""':-------------- ---....----- .1: ~ 01 --l.( s.- August 22, 2003 CITY'S-COPY Randy West WW Services 18440 Bums Parkway Anoka, MN 55303 Re: Timbercrest Park Retaining Wall Investigation Dear Mr. West: As requested, MRJ Engineering has conducted a review of the existing boulder wall located along the Northeast section of the wetlands at the Timbercrest Park Development, in Prior Lake. The purpose ofthe site visit was to determine the long-tenn stability of the existing retaining wall. The site review occurred on August 20,2002. The review consisted of the following: Taking measurements and elevations of the existing retaining walls. Obtaining background infonnation from wall contractor Taking notes of the site conditions. Site Observations: The wall in question is a single boulder wall as shown on the attached ~e 3), The wall is approximately 500' in l~gth and are is not directlv suppo~~y struc~t is located approximatAly l' in fi:.~ffieaemleaIed wetlaitds. There is miniiit~8lope at the top and bottom ofthe structure.- ~ ( /--b-v According to the Randy West ofWW Services, the walls were originally designed and constructed for a 6' exposed height. After initial construction of the wall, grading planrevisions dictated an increase in the exposed height of the wall to 10.5', which is the maximum eXposed height found by MRJ Engineering during our site inspection. The boulders on the base of the wall were found to be range in approximate overall depth from 30 to 50". Even larger boulders were found on the upper two courses of the wall, as WW Services properly increased the boulder depth in response to the increase in wall height requirement. The overall setback was found to average approximately 160, based on three different measurements taken by MRJ Engineering, Fabric was clearly placed at the back of the retaining wall, as per the previous design prepared by MRJ Engineering for a different boulder wall. There was evidence of crushed stone drainage zone at the rear of the fabric at various locations. WW Services informed MRJ Engineering that drainage stone was placed throughout the back of the wall as well as careful attention placed at compacting the backfill near the rear of the wall. We were also informed that all compaction tests taken were satisfactory. There was very little embedment found at the base of the wall, as WW Services placed the boulders near grade at the wetland location. Conclusions: The boulder size for the retaining wall given the maximum height, site geometry and soil conditions is acceptable to meet minimum safety factors. There exista a few areas along the base of the wall where the boulder depths are less than what would be required, but they were adjacent to larger boulders, which will stabilize those of less than desirable depth. MRJ Engineering found no areas of immediate concem, relative to boulder depths. MRJ Engineering has informed WW Services to create a 3: I toe slope at the base ofthe wall, terminating at the wetlands. This will provide the retaining wall with additional resistance to sliding, and overturning failure. This toe slope material is to be compacted to 95% standard proctor. If these recommendations are followed, the wall will function safely as a gravity wall. This statement is made under the assumption that the wall contractor used drainage stone throughout the retaining wall construction and performed the required minimum compaction efforts at the back of the wall. The conclusions retained are based on my professional opinion. These opinions are arrived in accordance with accepted engineering practices in this time and location. No other warranty is implied or intended. Should additional information become available, this report may be modified based on ,the new data.
