PRIOR LAKE COMMUNITY ASSETS AND SHARPENING OF MESSAGE
DISCUSSION: Introduction
The purpose of this agenda item is to discuss “what makes Prior Lake unique”.
History
During previous meetings, EDAC members discussed EDA direction for the committee to prepare
information on Community Assets so the city will be able to use that information in future marketing
efforts. During the July meeting, EDAC members suggested the committee focus on two separate
areas: 1) what attracts business to the community; and 2) what attracts residents to the community.
EDAC members identified business attraction and residential attraction areas of focus, including:
Business Focus
Pad ready land and zoning information
Land value; price per square foot compared to other communities
Tax rate
Available City and County incentives
Low crime rate
Arts, culture, entertainment
Thriving downtown (activities and events)
SMSC (size, proximity, jobs, entertainment)
Permits pulled, new businesses, Mom & Pop businesses.
Market to businesses attracted to Prior Lake
Residential Focus
Household income
Schools
Growth
Low crime rate compared to metro
Lakes, parks, recreation
% high school graduates, % college graduates
High School Fab Lab
Small town feel
Population age range (young & old)
Current Circumstances
The next step is to review each of the topics identified by the committee and ‘sharpen’ the message
with specific information related to Prior Lake. Staff has suggested additional specifics for most
topics on the attachment for EDAC review and direction.

Conclusion
EDAC members should review the attachment and provide additional information or specifics they
would like staff to include. Staff will make the necessary revisions and share the results to the EDA.

The EDAC was directed by the EDA to compile specific information on Prior Lake’s Community
Assets so the city will be able to use that information in future marketing efforts. The purpose of
today’s discussion is to sharpen the message with specific information related to Prior Lake so the
marketing information will not give the impression of being generic statements used by many com-
munities.
