The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA), along with SouthWest Transit, Plymouth Metrolink and Maple Grove Transit have developed a service plan for this project; the result is S2S (Suburb to Suburb) Route 494. Designed to demonstrate that express bus service between suburbs can be successful in the Twin Cities, Route 494 is aimed at increasing access to major employment and commercial centers throughout the western Twin Cities suburbs. This ‘first of its kind’ collaborative effort begins transit service on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, serving Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Maple Grove, Plymouth and Shakopee. Route 494 will provide commuters with a one-seat ride between Shakopee’s Marschall Road Transit Station and Station 73 in Plymouth (via SouthWest Station or the Golden Triangle in Eden Prairie) with connecting service to/from Maple Grove Transit Station. The service plan includes 20 trips operating about every 30 minutes in both northbound and southbound directions during the morning and afternoon peak periods five days a week. Providers will use existing facilities and fleet and will integrate with local routes at major Park & Ride locations in Eden Prairie, Minnetonka (Hopkins Crossroads), Maple Grove, Plymouth and Shakopee. As part of a large outreach effort to make communities, employers and potential riders aware of the new Suburb to Suburb transit service, MVTA staff will provide a brief presentation to the City Council.
