The police department is two officers and 1 sergeant short in patrol. 3 new officers started on January 4th
and are continuing to train assigned with a senior officer. These shortages along with a 21% increase in
calls over last year, have made the month very busy for the officers even though February is traditionally
one of our slower months for calls. This shortage is the major reason why traffic stops are down by 34%,
as the officers are just too busy covering calls and unable to work as much traffic enforcement.
A continued mild winter has helped to keep accidents down, down by 24% over last year. We assisted
other agencies with two pursuits that came through Prior Lake, one in which officer deployed stop sticks
which led to the vehicle stopping and an arrest by Scott County, and the other in which a carjacking
suspect crashed and we assisted in taking him into custody for Bloomington PD. Of note on the DWI calls
was one in which a pregnant female was arrested after initial screening showed she was more than twice
the legal limit.
