History In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Current Circumstances Observance of Police week is to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve the citizens and visitors of Prior Lake. Each day the women and men of the Prior Lake Police Department don their uniform and patrol the streets and parks, homes and buildings, woods and waters to keep the citizenry safe and protect them from those that do evil. Each one of them is prepared to pay the ultimate sacrifice to defend those that cannot defend themselves and preserve the freedoms the constitution provides to us all. Conclusion It is recommended that the city council proclaim May 15-21, 2016 as Police Week to show our respect to those officers that have given the ultimate sacrifice, and to the commitment the Officers of the Prior Lake Police Department show each day. ISSUES: The City of Prior Lake’s police department is a great asset to the city, providing around the clock professional law enforcement services for the citizens, businesses, and visitors. Recognizing the hard work they do on a daily basis and the sacrifices other officers have made in protecting the citizenry of this country is a small token of the gratitude they deserve. 2 FINANCIAL IMPACT: No financial impact ALTERNATIVES: 1.
