HomeMy WebLinkAbout08 08 2016 Police PresentationPRIOR LAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT •THE PLPD PROVIDES PUBLIC SAFETY LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICES TO THE CITY OF PRIOR LAKE. •25 SWORN OFFICERS AND 6 SUPPORT PERSONNEL PROVIDE 24/7/365 SERVICES TO A CITY OF OVER 25,000 RESIDENTS AS WELL AS TENS OF THOUSANDS OF VISITORS EVERY DAY. •THESE OFFICERS ARE NOT ONLY THE ENFORCERS OF LAWS AND ORDINANCES, BUT THE FIRST CALL FOR HELP FOR ALL EMERGENCY SERVICES INCLUDING MEDICAL, FIRE, ANIMAL CONTROL, PUBLIC WORKS, UTILITIES, HOMELESSNESS, MENTAL HEALTH, FAMILY SERVICES, AND MANY MANY MORE. •TODAY’S LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ARE ASKED TO PROVIDE MORE THAN EVER BEFORE IN HISTORY. PROFESSIONAL POLICE SERVICES •AFTER RECENT EVENTS SOME IN THE PUBLIC AND MEDIA HAVE PAINTED ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT WITH A BROAD BRUSH. MANY OF THESE STATEMENTS ARE COMPLETELY FALSE, EXAGGERATIONS, OR AT BEST MISPERCEPTIONS. •THE STAFF AT PLPD IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING EXCEPTIONAL SERVICES, DELIVERED IN A FAIR MANNER, WITH COMPASSION. •ZERO FORMAL COMPLAINTS FILED IN 2015. CURRENT SERVICE LEVELS •PRIOR LAKE CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 9180 HOUSING UNITS •THERE ARE 25 POLICE OFFICERS, FOR A STAFFING LEVEL OF 367 HOUSEHOLDS PER OFFICER •SO JUST IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS, THERE HAS BEEN ENOUGH GROWTH APPROVED TO SUPPORT THE NEED FOR .96 ADDITIONAL OFFICERS (BASED ON HOUSEHOLDS). DEMAND FOR SERVICE = STAFFING •2+2+2=5 •THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW SERVICE LEVELS SUFFER, AND LIVES ARE PUT AT RISK, FROM NOT HAVING ENOUGH OFFICERS TO HANDLE THE INCREASE IN CALLS FOR SERVICE IT’S 6:20 PM ON TUESDAY YOU HAVE 1 SGT.AND 4 OFFICERS WORKING.
