EDAC Commercial Area Liaison Business Visits EDAC Members: discussed the number of completed visits and the need to complete a commercial area liaison report for the EDA. The EDAC had a goal of contacting every brick and mortar business in 2016 and althou gh every business has not been contacted the committee felt the report should be prepared and include the visits completed in 2016. All members who have not entered their business visits into Dropbox should do so as soon as possible. EDAC Members: reviewed commercial area liaison assignments because the committee lost a few of its members including Choudek, Voreis and Brazier. Three EDAC members offered to serve as commercial area liaisons; Rosenfeld was assigned to Deerfield/Welcome, Martin was assigned to the Village Commerce area and Petschl was assigned to the Downtown. McCabe: said staff will email the commercial liaisons a survey and the information gathered related to number of visits, liaison comments, common themes from the business owners, etc. will be used in the report to the EDA. EDAC Members: felt the report to the EDA should include recommendations or key findings. b. Outreach & Marketing Subcommittee Prchal: informed the EDAC that the Outreach and Marketing subcommittee met to discuss strategies to contact and inform local businesses, including through social media, letters, emails, etc.; and to begin planning for a future Business Mixer event (to be renamed), possibly in the fall of 2017. Henry, Martin, Carroll, Briggs and Erbaugh volunteered to serve on the Business Mixer subcommittee. EDAC Members: requested Dave Elbon, City of Prior Lake Communications Coordinator, attend the next EDAC meeting to review communication and social media strategies. EDAC Members: discussed whether the City of Prior Lake or individual commercial liaisons should host Facebook pages for their specific commercial areas. c. 2017 Goals McCabe: highlighted the 2017 EDAC Goals which were approved by the City Council during their January 9, 2017 meeting, and include: ➢ Expand upon the Commercial Area Liaison program with increased outreach by scheduling small group discussions or workshops with targeted areas of the business community to; (i) clearly communicate information to business owners; (ii) ensure material about planned or proposed projects is easily accessible; (iii) listen and report on business concerns; and (iv) provide an opportunity for business owners to engage in a constructive conversation about the future of Prior Lake. ➢ Focus on building collaboration between businesses, advise businesses regarding outside support organizations such as the First Stop Shop, Open to Business or RiverSouth and be prepared to work cooperatively and collaboratively to support newly elected and appointed officials. ➢ Create an EDAC subcommittee to establish goals and develop implementation strategies to encourage and promote the business climate, collaboration opportunities and business expansion in Prior Lake with the use of technology and social media. Other goals or objectives which were discussed, included; building upon and improving the commercial liaison program; hold workshops within each commercial liaison area, similar to those held in the Deerfield/Welcome area, and because workforce is a big concern with local business owners, assist businesses by providing information related to employment resources. 4. The meeting adjourned at 8:58 a.m. Submitted by: Casey McCabe 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT MEETING DATE: March 23, 2017 AGENDA #: 3.a. PREPARED BY: Casey McCabe, Community Development Specialist AGENDA ITEM: EDAC COMMERCIAL AREA LIAISON EDA REPORT DISCUSSION: Introduction The purpose of this agenda item is to provide direction to staff to finalize the commercial area liaison report to the EDA. History One of the committee’s duties outlined in the EDAC Bylaws is, “To serve as a liaison between city government and the community through interaction with business leaders and community residents.” To help accomplish this, the EDAC has previously assigned some of its members to act as a liaison to five specific commercial and industrial areas of the community. The role of the EDAC liaison is to help communicate City and EDAC activities with business owners and provide an additional point of contact for their questions and concerns. The EDAC commercial area liaison assignments for the commercial areas of the community are below. The committee may determine it wishes to have a minimum of two liaisons for each com- mercial area. ➢ Downtown Area – Erbaugh / Prchal ➢ Deerfield Business Park / Welcome Avenue Industrial Area – Henry ➢ Commerce Avenue / Fountain Hills Area – Larson / Tande ➢ Village Commerce / South Lake Village Area – Carroll ➢ Gateway Area – Mahoney Conclusion Staff has not received all the information for visits in the South Lake Village area or Commerce Avenue area of the community. This information is necessary to complete the report for the EDA. In addition, the EDAC should provide direction to staff related to recommendations the committee would like to include in the report. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Discussion Only 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT MEETING DATE: March 23, 2017 AGENDA #: 4.c. PREPARED BY: Casey McCabe, Community Development Specialist AGENDA ITEM: CITY OF PRIOR LAKE PROMOTIONAL VIDEO DISCUSSION: Introduction The purpose of this agenda item is to review a promotional video prepared by the City of Jordan and discuss whether the City of Prior Lake may benefit from a similar video. Current Circumstances The City of Jordan, MN recently produced a promotional video which can be viewed at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/CityofJordanMN/videos/616108005265978/ Conclusion The video was posted on the City of Jordan Facebook page on March 1st and as of March 13th, the video had 49,000 views. The Jordan video appears to focus on attracting families to their community. If the EDAC sees value in the video the City of Prior Lake may wish to produce a similar video or focus on commercial and industrial attraction. The EDA discussed this item during their March 20th meeting and requested the EDAC provide their recommendation to the EDA related to whether the committee sees value in Prior Lake producing a similar video and if so, what should the focus of the video be and what content should be included? ISSUES: The production of the video would require approval of the EDA. If the EDA is interested in producing a video they will likely work with the EDAC on this project and receive direction from the City Council. The committees may also explore collaboration opportunities with the Prior Lake Chamber, Scott County First Stop Shop, SMSC, RiverSouth, or another local organiza- tion(s). FINANCIAL IMPACT: The estimated cost of a similar video would be approximately $5,000 and funding would likely be provided with EDA Professional Services Funds. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Provide direction to staff related to a City of Prior Lake promotional video. 2. Take no action. RECOMMENDED MOTION: As determined by the EDAC. 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT MEETING DATE: March 23, 2017 AGENDA #: 5.a.
