HomeMy WebLinkAbout6B Public Works Week PresentationPublic Works Week May 21st –May 27th, 2017 Public Works Week Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week. The purpose is to educate the public on the importance of public works in their daily lives. As the cornerstone of civilization, public works provides, maintains, and improves the structures and services that assure a higher quality of life for our community. Our streets, roads, and bridges keep us linked together and our clean water and sanitation services keep us healthy and allow our community to grow and prosper. Public Works Week Our Public Works staff goes unnoticed for the most part while they are quietly serving our residents 24 hours a day with dedication and professionalism. We would like to therefore take a few minutes to highlight some of what our Public Works Department accomplished in 2016 Public Works Week Public Works 2016 Accomplishments Water: •Operated our 7 wells, water treatment plant, 2 water towers,130+ miles of watermain, and thousands of valves and hydrants. •Overhauled the equipment at Well No. 5. •Repaired 10 watermain breaks. Public Works Week Public Works 2016 Accomplishments Sanitary Sewer: •Operated our 41 lift stations and 115+ miles of sanitary sewer pipe. •Cleaned 1/3 of the City sewer mains. •Completed video inspections of 1/5 of the City sewer mains. Public Works Week Public Works 2016 Accomplishments Streets: •Maintained 100 miles of City streets including snow plowing, pothole repairs, sealcoating, patching, and overlays. •Sealcoated 8.7 miles •Mill & Overlay 0.9 miles •Reconstructed 0.5 miles •Plowed over 4,000 miles during winter season Public Works Week Public Works 2016 Accomplishments Parks: •Maintain over 50 parks and natural areas, 75 miles of trails and sidewalks, public beaches, fishing piers, and athletic fields. •Constructed Eaglebrook Park playground. •Upgraded 20-year old lights at Ponds Park and added storage building to share with P.L.A.Y. •Upgraded Rotary Gateway Park in downtown. Public Works Week Public Works 2016 Accomplishments Storm Water: •Ponds Park irrigation storm water reuse project •Removed nearly 1,000,000 lbs. of material from streets thru sweeping resulting in 578 fewer lbs. of phosphorous going to impaired lakes. •Completed Fish Point Park project which treats storm water runoff from 89 acres of land prior to entering Lower Prior Lake.
