The incident case reports listed are just a sampling of the 24 crime index categories included in the Uniform
Crime Report and selected call classifications as requested by the City Council for tracking, therefore the
totals of the selected categories will not add up to the total number of incidents shown on the last line
above.
As explained previously, the Police Department went to a new records system in July 2016 and statistical categories
are tracked differently than before. In order to provide a closer comparison to last year, traffic stops are included in
the total incidents. Previously they were not in the old RMS system, or in this report.
*The category of Disorderly Conduct/ Disturbing the Peace is also categorized differently in the new system with
subcategories also included whereas previously they were not. For that reason, the percent increase is not shown.
**Also new for 2017 on the monthly statistics are the categories of Medicals, and Mental Health calls. This was
information requested by the City Council to be added to the report.
Year to date most categories are up, which explains why traffic stops are down, as officer have less
unassigned time due to being on calls. Total incidents are not exact as the traffic stops were partially
5E
counted in the old RMS system but are fully counted now. Starting next month, the RMS system will have
been in place for one year and a closer comparison within the same system will make the comparison tear
to year more equitable.
New as of April, were “heat maps” as requested by council, and now we are able to provide them through
the new RMS system and additional crime mapping software. Additional public access to crime maps was
rolled out in June. Links to the crime maps are provided on the police department webpage and we are
doing extensive marketing of the tool available on www.communitycrimemap.com
