HomeMy WebLinkAbout6B Promotion Ceremony Lieutenant and Sergeant 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT MEETING DATE: SEPTEMBER 5, 2017 AGENDA #: 6B PREPARED BY: MARK ELLIOTT, POLICE CHIEF PRESENTED BY: MARK ELLIOTT AGENDA ITEM: PROMOTION CERMONY (SERGEANT AND LIEUTENANT) PRESENTATION: The position of Sergeant is a very important position in the police department. Sergeants are the first line supervisors responsible for overseeing the patrol operations around the clock. They offer direction to the officers and act as a resource to coach, train, direct, and assist the officers with their work. They are an important part of the city management team in implementing policy and directing service delivery. Over the past few months an extensive testing process was used to select a new sergeant within the police department. The process involved testing, interviews and leadership and management assessments. Officer Craig Johnson stepped up to the challenge and distinguished himself throughout the process and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on August 20th. This agenda item is to recognize Sergeant Johnson for his accomplishment. Sergeant Johnson has been with the Prior Lake Police Department for 11 years and has worked as a patrol officer, and trainer in our use of force, and field training officer programs. Prior to joining the Prior Lake team, he had several years of service in the Army. Chief Elliott will call Sergeant Johnson up to the podium with him and introduce him and say a few words, and will then move on to introducing the Lieutenant. The position of Lieutenant is the second in command in the Prior Lake Police Department and a vital position to the day to day operation of the department. Oversight of patrol operations, investigations and property management falls within the areas of responsibility of the Lieutenant. Additionally, covering as the executive officer when the Chief is unavailable. Over the past eight months there has been an ongoing process to select and fill the vacancy created from the retirement of the last Lieutenant. During that process, Sergeant John Stanger stepped up and offered his vast experience and education, as well as his willingness to fill this role. Lieutenant Stanger has been with the department for 21 years and has served in a variety of positions including those of patrol officer, detective, 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 swat operator, and patrol sergeant. John came to Prior Lake PD with several years’ experience as an officer in suburban Chicago. John has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s degree in Public Safety Management. Chief Elliott will call Lieutenant Stanger up to the podium with him and introduce him and say a few words. Council members are welcome to offer both the Sergeant and the Lieutenant their best wishes as part of this agenda item.
