AGENDA ITEM: PROCLAMATION TO DECLARE THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 8-14, 2017 AS
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
DISCUSSION: October 8 through 14, 2017 is National Fire Prevention Week. The Fire
Department will be conducting fire prevention and safety awareness activates.
During this week. Firefighters will be visiting elementary school classrooms
distributing fire prevention materials and performing demonstrations. To promote
Fire Prevention Week, the Fire Department will host an open house at Fire Station
2 located at 3906 Station Place NW on Thursday, October 12 at 5:30 p.m. The
open house will include truck tours and rides, the fire safety house, smoke
detector information and Allina ambulance tours. The mayor will read the
proclamation and present it to Firefighter Eric Zimmerman.
PROCLAMATION
DECLARING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 8-14, 2017 AS FIRE PREVENTION WEEK IN PRIOR LAKE
WHEREAS In 1922, President Warren G. Harding proclaimed the first Fire Prevention Week as the week that
includes the date of October 9, the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; and
WHEREAS According to the National Archives and Records Administration’s Library Information Center, Fire
Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record; and
WHEREAS The City has established a Prior Lake Volunteer Fire Department located in two fire stations who,
together with the Police Department and Allina Ambulance are primarily responsible for the protection
of life and property; and
WHEREAS These dedicated firefighters, in addition to responding to emergency fire alarms, road rescues and a wide
variety of other emergency calls, make Fire Prevention Week the beginning of their fire prevention,
education and safety campaign.
NOW THEREFORE, I, KIRT BRIGGS, MAYOR OF PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA do proclaim the week of
October 8-14, 2017 to be Fire Prevention Week in the City of Prior Lake and hereby encourage all Prior Lake residents to
support and participate in fire safety education activities and fire prevention behavior during this special week and
throughout the year.
