History In 2008 the SMSC donated several AED’s to Prior Lake PD. The AED’s have been used many times by Prior Lake Police Officers to attempt to resuscitate those suffering from a cardiac arrest within our community. As part of those efforts many, well over 20, lives have been saved through the use of these AED’s. Current Circumstances Those AED’s have reached the end of their useful lifecycle and the need to replace and upgrade to the latest technology in this life saving tool was realized. As part of this initiative the police department applied for a grant from the SMSC as part of their AED program. Prior Lake took delivery of this donation on October 11th at a ceremony at the SMSC Public Safety Building. Prior Lake received the 1000th AED as part of this donation. At the ceremony SMSC Vice-Chairman Keith B. Anderson said “After helping first launch this program 13 years ago, I’m honored to be here to celebrate this milestone and all of the lives saved by the AEDs we’ve donated. Public safety and first response capabilities are very important to the SMSC, and helping neighbors like Prior Lake by donating AEDs demonstrates our commitment.” Police Chief Mark Elliott commented, “Thank you to the SMSC for this generous contribution to our department. Having AEDs at the ready in our police cruisers positions us to save lives. Responding to medical calls is one of the primary functions of our officers, and having the right equipment, like these new AEDs gives our patients a better chance for a successful outcome. On behalf of our residents, businesses and visitors I would like to thank the SMSC for being a benevolent and caring public safety partner.” The officers have been trained on the new AED’s and they have been placed in the squads. 2 Conclusion The donation is an example of the great working partnership the City and SMSC have in jointly providing for public safety in our communities. FINANCIAL IMPACT: This was not a budgeted item so the donation of $18,925.20 is greatly appreciated.
