HomeMy WebLinkAbout02 23 2017 EDAC minutes 1 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 CITY OF PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES – February 23, 2017 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 7:30 a.m. in the WagonBridge Conference Room at Prior Lake City Hall. Members present: Lloyd Erbaugh, Jeff Petschl, Jim Mahoney, Kim Prchal, Stephanie Carroll, Kirt Briggs, Wade Larson, Thane Tande, Bill Henry Trisha Rosenfeld and Chamber Liaison Sandi Fleck. Staff present: Dan Rogness and Casey McCabe. Guest present: Ron Martin. 2. Approval of Meeting Minutes a. January 26, 2017 MOTION BY PRCHAL and SECOND BY MAHONEY to approve the January 26, 2017 meeting minutes. Motion adopted unanimously. 3. Old Business a. EDAC Commercial Area Liaison Business Visits EDAC Members: discussed the number of completed visits and the need to complete a commercial area liaison report for the EDA. The EDAC had a goal of contacting every brick and mortar business in 2016 and althou gh every business has not been contacted the committee felt the report should be prepared and include the visits completed in 2016. All members who have not entered their business visits into Dropbox should do so as soon as possible. EDAC Members: reviewed commercial area liaison assignments because the committee lost a few of its members including Choudek, Voreis and Brazier. Three EDAC members offered to serve as commercial area liaisons; Rosenfeld was assigned to Deerfield/Welcome, Martin was assigned to the Village Commerce area and Petschl was assigned to the Downtown. McCabe: said staff will email the commercial liaisons a survey and the information gathered related to number of visits, liaison comments, common themes from the business owners, etc. will be used in the report to the EDA. EDAC Members: felt the report to the EDA should include recommendations or key findings. b. Outreach & Marketing Subcommittee Prchal: informed the EDAC that the Outreach and Marketing subcommittee met to discuss strategies to contact and inform local businesses, including through social media, letters, emails, etc.; and to begin planning for a future Business Mixer event (to be renamed), possibly in the fall of 2017. EDAC Members: supported hosting a business mixer event in the fall of 2017 and asked city staff to request funding from the EDA at a future meeting. Henry, Martin, Carroll, Briggs and Erbaugh volunteered to serve on the Business Mixer subcommittee. EDAC Members: requested Dave Elbon, City of Prior Lake Communications Coordinator, attend the next EDAC meeting to review communication and social media strategies. EDAC Members: discussed whether the City of Prior Lake or individual commercial liaisons should host Facebook pages for their specific commercial areas. c. 2017 Goals McCabe: highlighted the 2017 EDAC Goals which were approved by the City Council during their January 9, 2017 meeting, and include: ➢ Expand upon the Commercial Area Liaison program with increased outreach by scheduling small group discussions or workshops with targeted areas of the business community to; (i) clearly communicate information to business owners; (ii) ensure material about planned or proposed projects is easily accessible; (iii) listen and report on business concerns; and (iv) provide an opportunity for business owners to engage in a constructive conversation about the future of Prior Lake. ➢ Focus on building collaboration between businesses, advise businesses regarding outside support organizations such as the First Stop Shop, Open to Business or RiverSouth and be prepared to work cooperatively and collaboratively to support newly elected and appointed officials. ➢ Create an EDAC subcommittee to establish goals and develop implementation strategies to encourage and promote the business climate, collaboration opportunities and business expansion in Prior Lake with the use of technology and social media. Other goals or objectives which were discussed, included; building upon and improving the commercial liaison program; hold workshops within each commercial liaison area, similar to those held in the Deerfield/Welcome area, and because workforce is a big concern with local business owners, assist businesses by providing information related to employment resources. 4. New Business a. None 5. Other Business a. Staff Update i. Prior Lake Business Pages McCabe: informed the committee that the first edition of the Prior Lake Business Pages for 2017 has been sent. Mr. McCabe reviewed the topics covered in the Business Pages. ii. Maxfield Commercial & Industrial Demand Analysis The Commercial & Industrial Demand Analysis being completed for Scott County by Maxfield Research is expected to be finalized by the end of February. Staff will provide a copy of the report to the committee when it is available. b. Residential and Commercial Activity Update EDAC Members: received a copy of the residential and commercial activity update as of January 31, 2017. c. Member Ideas/Recommendations i. Prior Lake Town Hall Meeting Recap Erbaugh & Briggs: provided a summary and discussion highlights from the February 16 th Town Hall meeting. Henry: requested a copy of the sign ordinance amendment for the Deerfield Business Park / Welcome Avenue Industrial Park area. EDAC Members: asked to receive the City Hall Weekly Update email. 6. Next Meeting Date. The next regular meeting of the EDAC will be on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 7:30 a.m. . 7. Adjourn. MOTION BY HENRY and SECOND BY PRCHAL to adjourn the meeting.
