The incident case reports listed are just a sampling of the 24 crime index categories included in the Uniform Crime
Report and selected call classifications as requested by the City Council for tracking, therefore the totals of the
selected categories will not add up to the total number of incidents shown on the last line above.
As explained previously, the Police Department went to a new records system in July 2016 and statistical categories
are tracked differently than before. In order to provide a closer comparison to last year, traffic stops are included in
the total incidents. Previously they were not in the old RMS system, or in this report.
*The category of Disorderly Conduct/ Disturbing the Peace is also categorized differently in the new system with
subcategories also included whereas previously they were not. For that reason, the percent increase year to date is
not shown.
**Also new for 2017 on the monthly statistics are the categories of Medicals, and Mental Health calls. This was
information requested by the City Council to be added to the report.

New as of April, were “heat maps” as requested by council, and now we are able to provide them through the new
RMS system and additional crime mapping software. Additionally, public access to crime maps was rolled out in
June. Links to the crime maps are provided on the police department webpage and this summer we did extensive
marketing of the tool available on www.communitycrimemap.com
Calls for service for the year are up by 17.78% over last year, and we have surpassed last year’s
total calls for service by 2,756 calls this year. With such a significant increase in calls the officers
were often forced to forgo proactive policing (traffic enforcement, dwi enforcement,
neighborhood patrols) in order to respond to the increase in calls.
The investigative unit had a very busy year with hundreds of hours of follow up on the
investigation of the murder in November of 2016, as of today three of the four defendants have
pled guilty, which speaks highly of the level of professionalism of the officers and detectives
involved in the case. Another shooting in March also demanded hundreds of investigative hours
and resulted in guilty pleas by both defendants. Several other cases also demanded extensive
investigation including several opioid overdose cases, where the detectives are tasked with trying
to locate the dealer that supplied the drugs. One such case resulted in a federal prosecution on
a dealer from South Carolina. The new drug task force investigator will be a great resource on
these types of cases going forward.
