Call to order Lori Olson called to order the regular meeting of the Citizen Engagement Committee at 4:30 p.m. on January 18, 2018 at city hall. Present: Brady Blanch, Kim Churchill, Marcia Diers, Eileen Newsome, Sarah Watters, Jessica Weber, Dave Elbon, Lori Olson, Annette Thompson Absent: William Kalberg (excused), Alexandra Matyja (excused) Guest: Cathy Erickson, Finance Director Minutes were approved with two corrections. II. 2018 City Budget Presentation City Finance Director Cathy Erickson gave a “finance 101” overview. Some good. questions that suggested there may need to be another presentation for “finance 102”. The presentation is in the document center on the website. III. Topics of Interest Topics committee members would like to learn more about include: Sarah suggested Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Eileen and Jessica mentioned Economic Development. Marcia suggested a historical perspective on Prior Lake. Give Prior Lake an identity. IV. Teen/Youth Representative on CEC Everyone thought it is a great idea but should be open to everyone. Sarah was wondering if there is a minimum age and Kim suggested grade should be a requirement. Jessica suggested having two students. Lori will work with attorney on details. Sarah recommended having youths help with outreach at public events like booths at Lakefront Days. Eileen would like to make sure we have specific responsibilities and duties for youths. V. Town Hall Ideas Lori explained low attendance was one reason to think about virtual town halls to reach other people. Jessica asked what are the issues that make people want more businesses and restaurants as suggested by the survey. Annette proposed economic development. What is our economic development plan? Perhaps Casey McCabe, the Community Development Director present at a CEC Meeting. Sarah suggested we hold town halls at different business locations. Jessica suggested any type of video has to be short. VI. Communication Priorities Dave reviewed the messages the city puts out in the Fall and Winter months. He asked members to listen to other community members to see if there are messages we need to address. Homework: Each committee member identifies two friends to sign up for the city’s Newswire and to follow/like us on Facebook. VII. Adjournment Lori Olson adjourned the meeting at 6 p.m. Next Meeting: Feb. 15, 4:30 p.m. at City Hall.
