AGENDA ITEM: FIREFIGHTER LAWRENCE SCHOMMER AND MARK FRIEDRICH
RETIREMENT PRESENTATION
INTRODUCTION: LAWRENCE SCHOMMER
Larry started with the Fire Department on January 1st, 1988 as a
Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician. He followed in the footsteps of his
father, Don Schommer, who served with the Fire Department for twenty plus
years.
For several years, Larry was involved with the fire safety and prevention program
within the Fire Department. During Fire Prevention W eek he was the coordinator.
He continued to be right up to his retirement. Larry also oversaw the Prior Lake
Fire Department Fire Safety House which was used by many area Fire
Departments to promote fire safety. Larry was also involved as a truck committee
member for the construction of the Department’s ladder truck.
Larry was a Fire Service mentor to many during his career and was always there
to lend a helping hand or to “set someone straight” if needed. The Fire Department
and the City of Prior Lake have been fortunate to have him. Larry will be missed.
Larry retired on January 31st, 2018 after 30 years of service with the Prior Lake
Fire Department.
MARK FRIEDRICH
Mark “Freddy” Friedrich started with the Fire Department as a
Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician in July of 1989. At the time Mark was
working part-time in public works for the City of Prior Lake.
Mark worked his way up the ranks over the years serving as a Firefighter, Captain,
and Assistant Chief.
After It’s completion in 2008, Mark was moved to Fire Station two as the first
Operations Chief at the new station.
Mark was also involved in several truck committees for the construction of the
Department’s engines, heavy rescue’s and ladder truck.
He was always a big part of the Departments fund raising activities, equipment
purchase, and maintenance.
Mark could always be counted on to lend an extra hand and was one of the best
apparatus operators the Department ever had! He worked very hard and took
great pride in the Fire Department and represented it well. “Freddy” will be greatly
missed by all.
Mark retired on March 16th, 2018 after twenty-nine (29) years of service with the
Prior Lake Fire Department.
CONCLUSION
Years ago, the city commissioned a video entitled,” Hero’s Among Us”. It talked
about the Prior Lake Paid on Call Fire Department and its members. Larry and
Mark truly personify the Hero’s Among Us who represent the best of our small-
town values.
Councilmembers may wish to share comments with Larry and Mark on the advent
of their retirements.
