HomeMy WebLinkAbout6A 2018 PC Accomplishments-Goals report 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 PLANNING COMMISSION AGENDA REPORT MEETING DATE: OCTOBER 22, 2018 AGENDA #: 6A PREPARED BY: PUBLIC HEARING: JEFF MATZKE, PLANNER & AMANDA SCHWABE, PLANNER NO AGENDA ITEM: CONSIDER APPROVING A LIST OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION’S 2018 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND 2019 GOALS DISCUSSION: Introduction The purpose of this item is to consider approving the Planning Commission’s top three accomplishments in 2018 and its top three goals for 2019. History Five years ago, the City Council initiated a new process whereby one Work Ses- sion is devoted to annual reports by the city’s boards and commissions. Each group is asked to report its top three accomplishments during the current year and its top three goals for the next year. This year the Work Session will be held on Monday November 19th. Current Circumstances Staff has developed a proposed list of accomplishments for 2018 and goals for 2019. The general guideline is to limit each category to three items. Conclusion Staff is proposing the following list of accomplishments and goals for considera- tion by the Commissioners. Please note that the goals are based upon the fol- lowing key factors: • The ongoing primary job of the Planning Commission is to review applica- tions submitted to the City related to the zoning and subdivision ordinances. • The ongoing 2040 Comprehensive Planning update process, which is antic- ipated to conclude in 2018. 2018 Accomplishments • Reviewed and recommended zoning actions related to community and economic growth including 6 plats totaling 161 residential units. • Evaluated the Subdivision Ordinance and proposed amendments, in- cluding, but not limited to lot combinations, proposed development signage, public hearing requirements for final plat PUD’s. • Acted upon numerous variance applications (11), and 1 conditional use permit. • Planning Commission continued efforts to increase communication via the addition of Proposed Development signage. 2 2019 Goals • Continue to make decisions and recommendations on subdivision and zoning applications throughout the year. • Identify ongoing learning opportunities with other metro area commu- nities to facilitate appropriate community development. • Foster and strengthen engagement and dialogue with the broader Prior Lake community. ISSUES: The approved list will be shared with the City Council and all other boards/com- missions at a Work Session on Monday, November 19th. All Planning Commis- sioners are invited to attend; at least one Planning Commissioner should volun- teer to present the accomplishments and goals. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Motion and a second to approve the list of 2018 accomplishments and 2019 goals as proposed by city staff, or as further amended by the Commission. 2. Provide direction to staff and continue discussion at a future meeting. RECOMMENDED MOTION: Alternative #1
