AGENDA ITEM: CONSIDER APPROVING A LIST OF THE PLANNING COMMISSION’S 2018
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND 2019 GOALS
DISCUSSION: Introduction
The purpose of this item is to consider approving the Planning Commission’s top
three accomplishments in 2018 and its top three goals for 2019.
History
Five years ago, the City Council initiated a new process whereby one Work Ses-
sion is devoted to annual reports by the city’s boards and commissions. Each
group is asked to report its top three accomplishments during the current year
and its top three goals for the next year. This year the Work Session will be held
on Monday November 19th.
Current Circumstances
Staff has developed a proposed list of accomplishments for 2018 and goals for
2019. The general guideline is to limit each category to three items.
Conclusion
Staff is proposing the following list of accomplishments and goals for considera-
tion by the Commissioners. Please note that the goals are based upon the fol-
lowing key factors:
• The ongoing primary job of the Planning Commission is to review applica-
tions submitted to the City related to the zoning and subdivision ordinances.
• The ongoing 2040 Comprehensive Planning update process, which is antic-
ipated to conclude in 2018.
2018 Accomplishments
• Reviewed and recommended zoning actions related to community and
economic growth including 6 plats totaling 161 residential units.
• Evaluated the Subdivision Ordinance and proposed amendments, in-
cluding, but not limited to lot combinations, proposed development
signage, public hearing requirements for final plat PUD’s.
• Acted upon numerous variance applications (11), and 1 conditional
use permit.
• Planning Commission continued efforts to increase communication via
the addition of Proposed Development signage.

2019 Goals
• Continue to make decisions and recommendations on subdivision and
zoning applications throughout the year.
• Identify ongoing learning opportunities with other metro area commu-
nities to facilitate appropriate community development.
• Foster and strengthen engagement and dialogue with the broader
Prior Lake community.
ISSUES: The approved list will be shared with the City Council and all other boards/com-
missions at a Work Session on Monday, November 19th. All Planning Commis-
sioners are invited to attend; at least one Planning Commissioner should volun-
teer to present the accomplishments and goals.
ALTERNATIVES: 1. Motion and a second to approve the list of 2018 accomplishments and 2019
goals as proposed by city staff, or as further amended by the Commission.
2. Provide direction to staff and continue discussion at a future meeting.
