HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSAC Meeting Minutes 07 12 2018Community Safety Advisory Committee 12 July 2018, Meeting Minutes Attending: Janine Alcorn, Gina Gertner, Tracy Miller, Woody Spitzmueller, Pat Doherty, Mike McGuire, PD Chief Mark Elliott, FD Chief Absentee: Rick Steinhaus, Cole Greenlee Meeting called to order at 4:05 pm by Janine. 3. Approval of meeting Agenda: Motion to approve by Gina, 2nd by Woody; approval unanimous. 4. Approval of June meeting minutes: Motion to approve by Janine, 2nd by Tracy, approval unanimous. 5. Hearings: None 6. Presentations: a. Stephanie Smith – Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women - SVABW serves residents in Scott & Carver counties. - Statistics were shared: o Domestic abuse impacts 1:3 women and 1:4 men. o Every 9 seconds a woman in the US is beaten by her partner. o Every race, religion, level of education, socio-economic status, etc…is impacted. - Domestic violence laws have gotten better but it is still a big problem. - Power & control wheel was presented. Power and control is what the abuser wants. - SVABW opened in 1982 with over 19,000 people being helped. - Services provided: o 24 x 7 crisis line o Criminal justice intervention program o Legal advocacy o Latina advocacy – SVABW needs more volunteers for this service o Support groups o Safe home program o Children’s visitation center o Community engagement and training ▪ High school students have reported that they wish education in this area would happen earlier. - The PLCSAC will talk in August about what we can do to support and gain awareness of the Domestic Violence Month in October. 7. Old Business: a. Harvest Market date - The PLCSAC will be there on July 26th. 8. New Business: a. Nite to Unite Tuesday August 7 a. Call the Prior Lake Police Department very soon if our neighborhoods are planning to have a celebration that night and would like a representative from the police department to show up. b. Community Fest Monday September 17 6:00 – 8:30 PLHS i. Police Department will have a table again and the PLCSAC is welcome to be there to do outreach. b. Student representative a. Let Chief Elliott know if we have any recommendations on anyone that is a junior or senior this coming year. 9. Other business, if needed: a. Remaining tenure of PLCSAC members was raised. a. Service on the committee by Gina, Janine and Pat is up in 2018. b. Service on the committee by Woody is up in 2019. c. New members are needed to fill those open spots plus there is currently one open resident spot and one student vacancy since Cole is going to college this fall. 10. Announcements/Correspondence: a. Fire Department updates a. Rick was not in attendance, but Mark advised that the FD has been really busy. b. Police Department updates a. Lieutenant John Stanger is retiring at the beginning of August. b. Four officers are out due to injuries currently. c. Officers are working a lot of overtime. d. Prior Lake has the highest crime rate in Scott County. e. Calls for service has gone up by 11% when comparing the first 6 months of 2018 with the same time period in 2017. Meeting was adjourned at 5:33. Motion by Gina; 2nd by Woody, approval unanimous.
