Ensure a safe and quality-built environment. DISCUSSION: Introduction We received a quote for an extension for the next 4 years for maintenance on the city’s 15 emergency civil defense sirens. The emergency sirens provide alerts on severe storm and tornado warnings. The sirens are an important part of the city’s emergency management plan. History Ready Watt has provided responsive service and thorough inspections over the past several years. Their thorough inspections have allowed us to repair what is needed, while delaying unnecessary replacement, while at the same time identifying necessary replacement and upgrade parts. Current Circumstances The City has 15 emergency sirens. These sirens are in the city CIP for replacement on regularly scheduled intervals. Through regular and proper preventive maintenance, the service life should be extended and allow for cost savings. Replacement costs are $18,000 each, so the preventive maintenance costs each year are less than half the cost of replacement of one siren. ISSUES: The city contracts this sort of work rather than utilize city employees to save money and assure that the specialists are available to keep the equipment functioning during emergencieas. FINANCIAL IMPACT: The cost of the extension ($8025 annually) is the same as we currently pay with no increase during the four-year extension period. ALTERNATIVES: 1.
