THUNDERSTORMS
TORNADOES
BLIZZARDS
SEVERE HEAT
THUNDERSTORM
Before a thunderstorm
strikes, pick a safe spot
in your household to
take cover. Make sure
to trim heavy tree limbs
away from your roof and
windows before a storm
occurs. During a
thunderstorm, take
shelter in a substantial
building or a car with
closed doors and
windows. Avoid using
any appliances with
water, especially in the
bathroom. Do not
handle electrical
appliances including
telephones, instead use
battery operated
devices. Stay away from
windows, which should
be closed and shuttered
during a thunderstorm. lf
you are outdoors and
cannot find shelter, stay
low to the ground.
Thunderstorms can
cause flooding, so be
sure to install check
valves in your drains in
advance.
TORNADO
Similarly to a
thunderstorm,
select a location in
your home for
taking shelter in the
event of a tornado
or tornado warning.
These areas are
preferably
underground, in a
basement, or other
protective spots. lf
you have time
before the tornado
strikes, move
desired items inside
and anything that
can be picked up by
the wind. Find ways
to strengthen your
garage doors, as
they are usually the
first to be damaged
during a tornado.
WI NTER STORM
When preparing for cold
weather, have
necessary materials
including a warm coat
and other appropriate
clothing such as gloves
or mittens, hats, water-
resistant boots, and
extra blankets. lt is
crucial for your car to be
winterized to make sure
you don't get stranded in
the event of a winter
storm. lt is also useful to
have a windshield
scraper in your car.
Protection from pipes
freezing is important for
your home's water
supply. Heating sources
should be up to code
and working properly,
with your house well
insulated. During a
blizzard or extreme cold,
stay indoors and keep
warm to decrease the
chance of hypothermia
and frostbite. lf you must
leave your house, use
public transportation
with safe discretion.
SEVERE HEAT
It is imperative to
have proper
functioning air
conditioning during
severe heat, so
make sure to keep
your appliances
maintained
throughout the
summer as a
preventative action
for when extreme
heat strikes. ln
severe heat, stay
hydrated and wear
light, loose
clothing. Stay
indoors in shaded
areas as much as
possible while
avoiding strenuous
activity. Eat small
frequent meals.
During a heat
wave, always
remain aware of
the temperature as
well as the heat
index.
