Attract, retain and train a high caliber workforce to ensure high-quality services. In the late 1990’s the Employee Council, which consists of employee volunteers from all departments who work to retain high levels of employee morale, initiated the Employee of the Year Award. The award was intended to be important to city employees because it is an honor bestowed upon them by their peers. It was also to be much more than a “feel good” exercise as the winner receives a $200 cash award, certificate and recognition. To date the recognition has been limited to fellow employees at our annual holiday luncheon and publication in the all new “Employee Digest”. This year the Employee Council thought the award could be made more prestigious by sharing the winner’s name and accomplishments with the city council and the general public via cable TV at a city council meeting. Each year employees nominate their peers who they feel deserve the Employee of the Year Award. Their nomination must point out examples of these characteristics in the employee’s work: • Consistent production of high-quality work and adherence to high ethical standards. • Demonstrates respect for the rights of citizens and co-workers as well as the need for positive and honest communication. • Consistent excellent service responding to customer needs and display of a "can do" attitude. • Customer service that is consistent with the City’s customer standards of service as well as dedication/innovation in meeting a recognized public need. Once the nominations have been submitted, one employee from each department is randomly drawn to judge the nominations by scoring them. The judges provide a numerical score in each category for each nominee. The nomination scoring the highest total is approved by the department heads and received the title of Employee of the Year. This year we had four nominations who were all from different departments. Nominations from various departments has become commonplace and attests to high status which employees attribute to this award. The voting is also very tight indicating that regardless of city department, we are blessed with hard working persons who embrace public service as their noble purpose. Dale Stefanisko received the highest score of this year’s nominees. Some quotes from his nomination are: • Dale often finds himself in the middle of difficult situations with sometimes confrontational residents. • Dale is professional, calm and respectful; he represents the city very well while dealing with the public, even when residents at times do not treat him with the same respect. • Dale has high standards for himself and takes hi profession seriously. • Dale has gone above and beyond the call of duty many times over the years by conducting inspections after hours or on the weekends, and by working with private contractors or other community organizations to assist a property owner when they were not able to do so on their own. • Dale’s work in our community is mostly completed behind the scenes and is not often recognized by the public; however, others within his department and property owners that neighbor these properties understand the impact of his efforts have on keeping our community safe and our properties well maintained. It would be appropriate to summarize this report and the characteristics which Dale has demonstrated. I know Dale would very much appreciate brief comments from councilmembers about service to our public generally and examples which Dale personifies specifically. Congrats and thanks to all employees, including those nominated for employee of the year and Dale Stefanisko who is our 2018 City of Prior Lake Employee of the Year!
