Dear Mr. Passofaro:
Allied Test Drilling Company has completed a site evaluation for the proposed addition to the
referenced single family home. Our work was completed at the request of Joe Passofaro. We
understand that a requirement of the City of Prior Lake made it necessary for Mr. Passofaro to
obtain our site evaluation.
The site of the existing house is located at 16077 Northwood Road in Prior Lake, Minnesota. The
subject property is located on the east side of Northwood Road (west side of Prior Lake). We
understand that a new addition is to be constructed on the south side of the home, near the
southwest comer.
Our scope of work included a visual inspection of the general site surface conditions and a hand
auger boring to evaluate the shallow subsurface conditions. The hand auger boring reached a
depth of approximately 4 feet below grade. Our on site work was completed on July 24, 2000.
No geotechnical drilling and/or sampling was completed as part of this evaluation.
Our observations indicated that a retaining wall was in place near the back (east) side of the
house, at the south end. This wall retains part of the natural slope and the section behind the wall
is a cut section from this natural topography. This retaining wall is located just east of the planned
house addition. The wall appears to be 5 feet or less in height and is constructed of wood ties
with anchors that extend into the retained mass. Based on a conversation with Mr. Passofaro, we
understand that this wall has been in place for a period of approximately seven years. Near the
bluff line, east of the residence, a two tiered retaining wall was constructed. This retaining wall
consists of prefabricated interlocking blocks. Mature deciduous trees were observed throughout
the east side of the property.
The shallow subsurface conditions, encountered in the hand auger boring, generally consisted of
alternating strata of sandy clay with a trace of gravel and silty sand. These soils are brown to dark
brown and dry to moist. The resistance to the turning of the hand auger indicated that the soils
are relatively stiff or dense.
No evidence of previous landslide activity was observed at the subject property. No signs of

bulging or failure in the retaining walls were observed. Our observations did not indicate any signs
of gross instability in the slope approaching the bluff line or within the bluff itself. Our observations
and the shallow subsurface conditions, encountered in the hand auger hole, indicate that the area
for the proposed addition is generally suitable for the planned construction.
Our evaluation is intended to provide a general overview of the site conditions and our
assessment of the general suitability of the area for the proposed construction. Shallow
subsurface exploration consisted of one hand auger boring to a depth of about 4 feet below grade.
Our conclusions are based on the observed surface conditions, the observed soil conditions within
the hand augered hole and our experience with similar site conditions. No geotechnical drilling
and/or sampling was performed as a part of this evaluation and no geotechnical design or
construction recommendations are presented in this letter report. Our surface observations and
shallow hand auger work do not constitute a direct or implied warranty that conditions encountered
prior to, during and/or after construction will be only as described in this report. Surface and
subsurface conditions can change with time, the natural variability of the subsurface soils and
construction work. Conditions that are different from those described in this letter report may be
encountered prior to, during and/or after construction. If conditions appear different from those
described in this letter report, we should be notified so that we may review the conditions and
verify or modify our analysis, as necessary.
