CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
MEETING DATE: MAY 6, 2019
AGENDA #: 5H
PREPARED BY: ANN ORLOFSKY, CITY CLERK
PRESENTED BY: MICHAEL PLANTE
AGENDA ITEM:
Consider Adopting Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Global Awareness Day on
May 15, 2019
DISCUSSION: Introduction
The purpose is to adopt a proclamation in support of Tuberous Sclerosis
Complex Global Awareness Day and urge all of our citizens to support the
search for a cure and assist those individuals and families who deal with this
challenging disease on a daily basis.
History
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), is a rare genetic disease with no cure. TSC
causes tumors to form in vital organs – like the brain, eyes, heart, lungs, kidneys,
liver and skin. TSC is also the leading genetic cause of both epilepsy and autism.
Tuberous sclerosis complex affects some people severely, and others so midly it
often goes undiagnosed. TSC is as common as Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) or
cystic fibrosis, so increased awareness is vital.
IMPACT:
Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance and other groups around the world have joined
together to promote awareness of the disorder to ensure people with TSC get the
best possible treatment and proper diagnosis.
ALTERNATIVES: 1.Motion and second as part of consent agenda to adopt proclamation as
presented.
2. Motion and second to remove the resolution from the consent agenda for
additional discussion.
