Attract, retain and train a high caliber workforce to ensure high-quality services. DISCUSSION: Introduction The theme of 2019 National Public Works Week is “It Starts Here”. This theme represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put forth by the public works professionals. Our Public Works Department makes sure there is potable water when you turn on your faucet in the morning, plow the streets and trails when they are deep in snow, and keep the City parks clean and safe. The bottom line is that citizens’ quality of life starts with public works. The men and women in our department are on duty 24/7 from power outages and ensuring lift stations are working to prevent sewer backup; to making sure the ball fields are in excellent condition for a Sunday tournament; to performing maintenance on Police and Fire vehicles allowing those departments emergency use of their vehicles. History Since 1960, The American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored National Public Works Week. Across the nation, APWA’s 26,000 members use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of the contributions of public works to their daily lives; planning, building, managing and operating the infrastructure of our local communities.
