PROCLAMATION DECLARING NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK FOR THE
WEEK OF MAY 19 – 25, 2019
GOAL AREA AND
OBJECTIVE:
High-Value City Services
4. Attract, retain and train a high caliber workforce to ensure high-quality
services.
DISCUSSION: Introduction
The theme of 2019 National Public Works Week is “It Starts Here”. This theme
represents the many facets of modern civilization that grow out of the efforts put
forth by the public works professionals. Our Public Works Department makes sure
there is potable water when you turn on your faucet in the morning, plow the
streets and trails when they are deep in snow, and keep the City parks clean and
safe. The bottom line is that citizens’ quality of life starts with public works.
The men and women in our department are on duty 24/7 from power outages and
ensuring lift stations are working to prevent sewer backup; to making sure the ball
fields are in excellent condition for a Sunday tournament; to performing
maintenance on Police and Fire vehicles allowing those departments emergency
use of their vehicles.
History
Since 1960, The American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored
National Public Works Week. Across the nation, APWA’s 26,000 members use
this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of the
contributions of public works to their daily lives; planning, building, managing and
operating the infrastructure of our local communities.

PROCLAMATION
Public Works Week in Prior Lake, May 19 – 25, 2019
Whereas, public works services provided in our community are an integral part of our residents’ everyday lives;
and
Whereas, the support of understanding and informed residents is vital to the efficient operations of public
works systems and programs such as water, sewers, streets, public buildings and parks; and
Whereas, the health, safety and comfort of this community greatly depends on these facilities and services;
and
Whereas, the quality and effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning, design, and construction, is
vitally dependent upon the efforts and skill of public works personnel; and
Whereas, the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated personnel who staff the Prior Lake Public Works
Department is materially influenced by the people’s attitude and understanding of the importance of
the work they perform.
NOW THEREFORE, I, KIRT BRIGGS, MAYOR OF PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA do hereby proclaim the week of May 19
– 25, 2019 as “Public Works Week in Prior Lake” and I call upon all citizens and civic organizations to acquaint
themselves with the issues involved in providing for our public works and to recognize the year-round, 24-hour
per day contribution public works personnel make to our health, safety, comfort and quality of life.
